Golf world stunned by Aussie Cameron Smith’s Masters outfit

As the golf world gears up for the Masters, fans couldn’t believe their eyes when an Aussie contender turned up in a seriously bold look.

Form & functionality? Smith dons suit

Cameron Smith is more than ready for a green jacket.

The Australian golfer is known for his shaggy mulleted look but he looked very sharp as warmed up for the first major of the year with a practice round at Augusta National.

Smith played the entire practice round wearing a navy suit jacket that matched his shirt and pants, and he didn’t appear too constricted by the surprisingly formal attire on the course.

Golf reporter Dan Rapaport wrote on X: “That cannot be comfortable.”

Golf Digest’s Joel Beall joked: “Cam Smith looks like he just got picked by the Hawks in the NBA Draft and is celebrating at Top Golf.”

Smith might well be manifesting a victory at the Masters and a maiden green jacket as he chases a second career major win and first since making the move to LIV Golf.

He’s not the only Australian set to make a fashion statement this week.

Last year Jason Day turned heads with his bold outfits and he has revealed he and his apparel sponsor Malbon have been asked to tone down his fashion looks for this year’s tournament.

“If they would have let us do what we first put the scripting through to them, it would have been a lot crazier than last year, but, you know it’ll be toned down, just because they have a little bit more, they asked to see the scripting before,” Day, 37, said during a recent appearance on the “Dan on Golf” show.

“See, the funny thing was that they never asked to see scripting of mine because I’ve always been pretty neutral and down the middle, and this year they asked because obviously what happened last year.”

Day, who finished tied for 30th in last year’s tournament, fuelled widespread chatter on social media over the looks created by Malbon, a lifestyle brand.

The navy blue slacks Day wore during the opening round of the 2024 Masters were likened to “parachute pants,” while the bold sweater vest worn on day two raised plenty of eyebrows.

Aussies tipped to contend at Masters

Australia has a strong contingent of five players at this year’s Masters — Cam Smith, Jason Day, Min Woo Lee, Adam Scott and Cameron Davis.

Lee is in great form, having won the Houston Open last month and the 26-year-old will be looking to improve on his career best finish of 14th at the 2022 Masters.

Smith’s Ripper GC team won last week’s LIV Golf event in Miami and the 2022 Open Championship winner returns to August, where he has finished in the top 10 in four out of the past five years.

“Cam Smith has been trying to work on freeing his golf swing up,” Fox Sports golf expert Paul Gow told news.com.au ahead of the Masters, which is only available to watch in Australia via Fox Sports and Kayo.

“He’s really creative Cameron Smith. He goes to this sort of golf course with a real plan but if it doesn’t work out, he’s got that creative edge around the greens. It’s really fun to watch.

“There’s no reason one or two of the Aussies couldn’t be in the hunt on Sunday afternoon.

Gow expects World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy to contend, and is also tipping Sweden’s Ludvig Aberg to be in the mix after finishing second last year.

“I went out and watched him for a couple of holes and wow,” Gow said.

“He’s just flushing it. If it all comes together, he’s got lots of parts of his game that are solid and that’s what you need around this golf course.”

A Masters Supercomputer, conducted by Prime Casino, is tipping Scheffler to win his third Masters title with a 31.9 per cent chance of triumph at Augusta.

McIlroy is rated a 23.7 per cent chance of ending his 11-year wait for a major title..

According to the Supercomputer, Min Woo Lee only has a 0.4 per cent chance of winning the Masters but has a 63.4 per cent likelihood of making the cut.
