A dominant Australian summer that netted Elvis Smylie the Australian PGA and the Order of Merit has also catapulted the “excited” Queenslander into his first major on US soil.
Smylie, 23, has been granted a special exemption to play the US PGA Championship at Quail Hollow in North Carolina next week, boosting the Australian contingent to seven at the year’s second major.
“I’m really excited for this opportunity,” Smylie said in a post to Instagram.
“Thank you to the PGA of America for the invite and to Chairman, Ian Baker-Finch, and his team at the PGA of Australia for all the help with this process.
“I can’t wait and I’ll see you all at Quail Hollow.”
Smylie’s PGA inclusion follows on from the previous two Order of Merit winners, David Micheluzzi and Kazuma Kobori, who were also granted late exemptions.
It will be a second major for Smylie, the son of Australian tennis great Liz, having played The Open Championship at Royal Troon last year, narrowly missing the cut.
After his breakthrough PGA win last summer at Royal Queensland, where he went toe-to-toe with Cameron Smith and Marc Leishman in the final group, Smylie secured playing status on the DP World Tour.
He has recorded three top-20 finishes, including in back-to-back events in his two most recent starts in China.
He will join countrymen Jason Day, Adam Scott, Cam Davis, Cam Smith and 2025 PGA Tour winners Min Woo Lee and Karl Vilips flying the flag at Quail Hollow.
The seven playing are the top seven ranked Australians on the Official World Golf rankings, with Smylie at 202.
“We’re delighted Elvis has received another opportunity to play against the world’s best players,” PGA of Australia general manager of tournaments and global tour relationships Nick Dastey said.
“Our thanks go to the PGA of America for again recognising our Challenger PGA Tour of Australasia Order of Merit with a place in the PGA Championship field.”
