Glenorchy Boxing Club trio set to compete on interstate stage after missing out on national titles

Three young Tasmanian boxers will be given the chance to compete on an interstate stage after two were deemed ineligible to compete at the national titles. Here’s how their local club got around the potential knockout blow.

A Tasmanian boxing club is set to provide three young locals the opportunity to show their talents on an interstate stage after two were deemed ineligible to compete at the upcoming national titles.

Young trio Connor Flakemore, Charlie Gregson and Tyler Wordsworth will all represent the Glenorchy Boxing Club on the Gold Coast War Zone 12 pro-am undercard this weekend.

The trip was organised by the club after both Gregson, 11, and Wordsworth, 13, were deemed too young to compete at the upcoming Australian Amateur Boxing League national titles while Flakemore, 19, was eligible but was also unable to compete due to a prior commitment.

The event is set to be held in New South Wales with state rules not allowing for anyone under the age of 14 to compete.

Glenorchy Boxing Club founder Rodney Curtain said the trip would do huge things for the development of all three young fighters and praised the father of Gregson who raised funds to make the trip possible.

“I feel they just need the opportunity to get away and have competition against different people to make them better for the future,” Curtain said.

“It wouldn’t be fair if we just catered for the older kids and left the juniors behind.”

While both Gregson and Wordsworth may be young, the two are already carving out successful amateur careers.

Gregson currently holds a 2-2 record while Wordsworth won an Australian title last year and holds an 8-5 win-loss record.

Hailing from a bloodline of boxers, Wordsworth said he was excited by the opportunity to compete on the Gold Coast for the first time.

“It’s just always been my thing,” Wordsworth said.

“Growing up I watched my Dad do it and I just wanted to take after him. I’m nervous (about this fight) but I’m also excited.”

The trio will step in the ring on Saturday night before returning home on Sunday ahead of the Tasmanian Boxing League’s final tournament of the year on October 26 at the Brighton Civic Centre.
