Former Sydney Thunder spinner Maisy Gibson will spend entire summer in the state after joining Tasmania and Hobart Hurricanes

An opportunity to feature in more 50-over cricket led an emerging talent to sign with Tasmania, and she has also committed to the Hobart Hurricanes for the WBBL season.

AN opportunity to cement herself within a WNCL set-up was the catalyst for Maisy Gibson’s decision to relocate to Tasmania, and the Hobart Hurricanes are set to cash in as well.

The former NSW leg spinner signed with the Tigers earlier in the year and has now also put pen to paper with the Hurricanes for WBBL|05.

Despite featuring in the Breaker’s 2017-18 50-over title, the 22-year-old was unable to lock down a regular spot in NSW’s talented line-up, and when the chance came to join the Tigers ranks she didn’t have to think twice.

“Coming down here kind of presented a bit more opportunity than what New South Wales could provide me with that team,” Gibson said as the state’s women cricketers began their Community Blitz week.

“I’d been in that program for four years and wasn’t playing consistent cricket, so I moved down here with the goal to play some consistent cricket.

“I think the change is what I needed to help gain some more experience and I think I can come down here and offer a little bit more with the ball and hopefully in a leadership role for the spinners as well.”

While she was not a constant figure in the NSW line-up, Gibson was a regular for the Sydney Thunder in the first four editions of the Big Bash, taking 36 wickets in 39 appearances at an economy rate of 6.47 and a strike rate of 18.

She has spent the past week on the Hurricanes and Tigers women’s pre-season tour in Darwin, and said the squad is in a good position to hit the ground running when the season proper rolls around.

The Hurricanes were crowned Strike League champions in the Northern Territory.

“There were some really positive signs, seeing what all the girls have been working on and seeing them execute it especially so early in the pre-season was great.

“We’ve got a couple of months until our first round games and a few more trial matches coming up, so I think we can take that momentum into the rounds with us.”
