NORTH Launceston’s quest to regain its TSL crown could receive an injection of AFL experience with a four-time leading club goal kicker relocating to Tasmania.
The Mercury can reveal former Richmond and Port Adelaide spearhead Jay Schulz, whose wife hails from Launceston, will move to the state at the end of the year.
Schulz played 193 matches between 2003 and 2016 for the Tigers and Power, booting 330 goals.
A noted sharp shooter, Schulz won Port’s goal kicking award in 2010, ’12, ’13 and ’14, finishing second in the Coleman Medal race in 2014.
He is also the Power record holder of most goals in a single match (eight) alongside Warren Tredrea.
The 35-year-old confirmed to the Mercury he has held discussions with both Launceston clubs, with the Bombers — who had their hopes of claiming a fourth consecutive State League premiership and sixth in seven seasons ended by their cross town rivals last weekend — front runners.
“We are planning to move down there at the end of the year, at the end of the school term for a few years at least, my wife is from Launceston,” Schulz said.
“I have spoken to both the Launceston clubs, probably more so to do with the north guys at the moment.
“But those conversations are in the works, nothing has been sorted.”
Schultz played eight games with North Shore in the Geelong Football League in 2019, but signed with VFL club Frankston this year as a senior assistant coach before the competition was shut down due to COVID-19.
The former first round draft pick said he was unsure whether he would lace up in the TSL — but did not rule out the possibility.
“It’s the million dollar question, I am not entirely sure yet. I didn’t play last year, my body has taken a fair bashing over the years.
“Having said that, it does always stick in the back of your mind that you want to continue to play.
“I’m not cancelling anything out. Initially the conversations with the clubs down there so far have been about coaching or a director of coaching of the clubs, those sorts of things.
“I won’t ever rule out playing.”
