Seventeen years ago, $4 per day would get you one picture of a “hot babe” straight to your Nokia.
An AFL fan has shared a hilarious late-night TV ad from 2006 promising “hot footy pics on mobile”, leaving internet users stunned at how times have changed.
Posting on Reddit’s AFL forum, user “otherpeoplesknees” shared the video writing, “$4 per day subscription, that’s where they’d get ya! And only one pic per day, WTFFFFFF. Still, better value than Crazy Frog ringtones.”
The ad for the now-defunct website “FootyBabes.com.au” featured a voiceover saying, “Footy babes on your mobile! For hot Aussie rules babes text AFL to 19 777 333. For rugby league text NRL to 19 777 333. Text now to 19 777 333.”
The fine print on-screen reads, “This is a subscription service. You must be 18 years or older to use this service. You will be charged a $0.50 joining fee plus $4 per day. One picture per day only.”
Many users couldn’t believe people used to pay for pictures of hot babes.
“Pornhub truly changed the world. $4 a day, OMG,” one wrote.
Another joked, “Food $400. Data $100. Rent $800. Hot footy pics on mobile $122. Utility $300. Someone who is good at the economy please help me budget this. My family is dying.”
But others pointed out how expensive most mobile services were in those days.
“Mate you [used] to have to pay 55 cents to get a score update on a game in 2002. My dad wasn’t happy when there was a nailbiter of a game and I hit update 100 times,” one person wrote.
Several noted that subscriptions were coming back into fashion.
“OnlyFans has brought it back around,” one wrote.
One user shared a story from when they worked in a Telstra call centre.
“I got a call from a mum one time, her 15-year-old had racked up about a grand’s worth of phone bill from one of these numbers,” they wrote.
“I couldn’t do anything about the charges, sadly, but I’ll never forget her closing words to me. ‘Alright, just disconnect the number. Don’t want him calling anyone for help when I f**king murder him.’”
Incredibly, one user followed up by posting an entire album of the actual “Footy Babes” pictures.
“If you’re into that kind of thing. Apologies for 2006 quality,” they wrote.
Responding to one dumbfounded response, the user explained how they found the pictures so quickly.
“I’m a hoarder, I keep data dumps of all my old phones,” they wrote. “Knew I had them all on one of my old Nokias so it was a pretty quick search on my PC. Originally, can’t remember. Didn’t f**king pay for them, lol.”
