AARON Mooy will commit his future to the English Premier League within a fortnight, as celebrations over securing promotion with Huddersfield turn into cold, hard decisions over his next career move.
After two days of talks with his parent club Manchester City and various suitors, Mooy and his agent will return to Australia for the Socceroos’ “Super June” waiting to hear which of the interested clubs will meet City’s valuation.
It’s believed Mooy has told teammates he hopes to have his future settled by the time Australia face Brazil in a friendly on June 12, in the wake of a triumphant season at the heart of Huddersfield’s remarkable promotion campaign.
MOOY: Terriers preparing to smash transfer record
IN DEMAND: Nine Premier League suitors chase Mooy
The 26-year-old has narrowed his options to England, politely declining interest from Europe to stay relatively close to his wife’s family in Scotland.
While Huddersfield are thought to be preparing what would be a record bid to sign him long term, other Premier League clubs have also spoken to City about the level of transfer fee involved.
Southampton, Newcastle and Brighton are thought to be among up to half a dozen interested parties, with Mooy keen to ensure his new home offers the maximum chance of playing every week.
The former Wanderers and Melbourne City midfielder will turn his attention to national team matters from the weekend, going into camp to prepare for a run of five games in 18 days with his star never more in the ascendancy.
Though fixtures against the likes of Brazil, Germany and Chile will put Mooy and the Socceroos in front of a global audience, his success with Huddersfield — recognised with a place in the Championship’s Team of the Season — has already provided the perfect resume of his ability.
The Terriers will submit a bid reported in England to be worth £8 million ($14m), though it’s likely interest from elsewhere will lift his market price beyond £10m.
That would be by some way a new record fee for an Australian player, less than a year after he left Melbourne City to have a second crack at English football.
Mooy’s agent, Paddy Dominguez, declined to discuss the specifics of any negotiations, but confirmed a number of factors would go into his decision.
“He can’t just go to the EPL as the only objective and just for the sake of it, Aaron wants to be playing every week and it’s important his move reflects that,” Dominguez said.
“First and foremost it’s up to Manchester City to decide what offer they might be prepared to accept for Aaron, and then he’ll make a decision.
“One thing we have decided is to rule out going to continental Europe. Aaron is settled here in the UK, and after the season he has had it’s natural he wants to have a crack at the EPL.”
