‘Don’t do that again’: Sad Sam Kerr Chelsea hoax rocks football world

A video of an emotional Sam Kerr stunned the football world in a post that left fans losing their minds — but all was not what it seemed.

'Really hard': Sam Kerr, Chelsea brutally troll fans

Aussie football superstar Sam Kerr has taken fans of her Chelsea club on an emotional rollercoaster in a series of posts on social media.

Kerr signed a two-year contract extension to stay at the Women’s Super League giants but the 30-year-old couldn’t resist having a bit of fun.

In a first post, Kerr sat down in a way that suggested she had some heavy news to impart.

Casting her eyes down several times, in one shot it even looked like she had a tear in her eye.

“I didn’t know how to have this conversation with you guys, but I think it’s just best saying it,” she said, sniffing as if she was crying.

“After four years, it’s really hard to sum up how I feel.

“My time at Chelsea has been unforgettable, lots of great memories made, lifelong dreams, winning trophies. Things that will stick with me the most will be the memories shared with fans and my teammates.

“I guess to the fans, just remember that I’ll always be Chelsea. I hope you welcome Sonia (new coach Bompastor) with open arms and keep supporting the girls.

“Everything that’s happened over the last four years those memories will stay with me forever and so will you guys.

“When I joined this place, everything felt alienated to me but now this place feels like home. Thank you so much.”

And with a message like that, there was no surprise fans took it hard.

The Chelsea Women Daily account posted: “I honestly don’t understand.”

Another fan said: “She’s leaving too? WTF is happening.”

Another commented: “She’s one of the players that made me started following the Chelsea women football … she’s such a great footballer and would be greatly missed … Wishing you good luck wherever you go @samkerr1.”

And there were hundreds more like that.

But one fan tweeted: “This must be a joke right?”

The answer to that question is yes.

Just 20 minutes after the first post, Chelsea posted another video with Kerr watching her own video on her phone, before saying: “Guys, what’s all this — I’m not leaving. This is Chelsea.”

She then added at the end of the video: “You guys really think I’d end on 99 goals?”

In her four years at Chelsea, Kerr has scored 99 goals in 128 matches for the club, as well as winning five WSL titles, three FA Cups and two League Cups.

Chelsea also renamed the men’s home, Stamford Bridge as Samford Bridge, as well as the women’s home Kingsmeadow as Kerrsmeadow in honour of the Aussie’s news.

But while the news is great for Chelsea, the fans weren’t that pleased about the way it was released.

“Don’t ever try that again in your life,” one fan wrote.

“Don’t try this again it’s not funny,” another commented.

Another fan said: “I also almost had a panic attack from that first vid.”

Another added: “You got us. I won’t forgive you for making me cry this morning.”

But there were plenty more who were loving it, calling it an “unreal announcement”, the “best news of the day”, while another said “I love you Kerr”.

The Daily Mail reported the idea for the hoax was Kerr’s.

While Chelsea fans will be elated once they finish having a panic attack, it comes as Kerr continues her recovery from an ACL injury suffered in January.

The horror blow means the Aussie superstar won’t participate in the Matildas’ Paris Olympics campaign but hopefully at least two more seasons will give fans hope that Kerr could still be around for the LA Olympics.
