Ange Postecoglou focusing on Premier League form turnaround after Tottenham’s memorable Europa League occasion

Ange Postecoglou enjoyed Tottenham’s Europa League win over Elfsborg but wasn’t getting carried away, knowing Spurs must find some English Premier League form.

It’s a night the academy should be proud of – Postecoglou hails Spurs’ young guns

Ange Postecoglou’s attention has quickly switched to his Tottenham side’s imminent clash against Brentford to ensure a “great night” in the Europa League isn’t overshadowed by further English Premier League woes.

Tottenham emphatically sealed a round-of-16 Europa League berth with a 3-0 home win on Friday morning (AEDT) over Swedish club Elfsborg.

Spurs’ three goalscorers – Dane Scarlett, Damola Ajayi and Mikey Moore – were all products of the club’s academy.

Ajayi and Moore are both teenagers, while Scarlett is 20.

“It was a great night for the club,” former Socceroos coach Postecoglou said.

“(There are) not many European nights where three homegrown products get on the scoresheet.

“I don’t know of many teams that are finishing European games like us with five or six teenagers on the field.”

However, not all went to plan for Spurs, with substitute defender Radu Dragusin joining the club’s extensive injury list after hurting his knee soon after coming on.

“I don’t have any further information, but it didn’t look good as he was coming off. We’ll just have wait and see, but it’s disappointing,” Postecoglou said when asked about the severity of the Romanian defender’s injury.

In better news, key defender Micky van de Ven’s return from a long-term hamstring injury was a success, with the Dutchman playing for the first 45 minutes before being replaced, as was the plan.

Van de Den’s presence could be vital in Spurs’ bid to find some Premier League for in the early hours of Monday morning when they visit Gtech Community Stadium to meet Brentford.

Tottenham has slipped to 15th on the ladder, having lost six of its past seven Premier League matches.

“We’re in a tough spot obviously in the league. My mind now is on Sunday (UK time) and trying to make sure we get our league form back to where it should be,” Postecoglou said.

“It has been and still is a tough period, particularly in terms of our league form, but there has still been real growth I believe, and it’ll all come to fruition at a point.

“I’m so certain and bullish about that … but right now it’s about trying to address the issues we’ve got at hand.”

Spurs have been heavily linked to Bayern Munich forward Mathys Tel, with the German club having reportedly accepted a 60 million euros ($A100.17m) offer for the 19-year-old Frenchman.

“I can’t tell you anything about Tel,” Postecoglou said.

“I’ve been focusing on getting the team prepared tonight. Other people are working in the background.

“I’m allowing them to get on with it, and when, and if there’s any news, I’m sure I’ll find out.”
