Far from coming up Short

Big Bash blaster D’Arcy Short’s destructive talent helped get the Hurricanes over the line in Friday night’s match against the Sixers.

BIG Bash blaster D’Arcy Short admits missing Australian ODI selection has fueled his quest even further to dominate this year’s tournament to remind selectors of his destructive talent.

Short, who leads the BBL run tally with 257 at an average of 51.4 and strikerate of 136.7, was surprisingly overlooked for the upcoming one day series against India starting next week.

It stunned a host of commentators, with Shane Warne shocked the selectors could not find room for Short in the 14-man squad.

However Australia’s loss is the Hobart Hurricanes’ gain, with the dynamic left hander plundering his third half century (64 from 42 balls) last night to get the hosts across the line by five wickets on the penultimate ball of the match against the Sydney Sixers.

In the process he became the second fastest player (in innings) to reach 1000 BBL runs behind Shaun Marsh, reached the milestone off the third fewest balls (680) and of the 19 batsmen who are in the 1000-run club, Short has the second best average and third best strikerate.

While disappointed at being overlooked for the 50-over format, Short declared he would use the omission as motivation to return to national colours.

“A little bit, all I can do is keep scoring runs and score runs consistently and then hopefully I can get back in that way,” Short said of being overlooked.

“That’s what I’m going to work towards and try and do.

“I’m very happy with the way I’m hitting them, all I can do is try and score runs consistently and hopefully I can do it for the rest of the tournament.

“Yeah I spoke to them [selectors] the other day, it’s the same thing, just score runs consistently, find different ways against spin and keep being consistent.”

For now Short is focused on helping Hobart continue its club record winning streak as the squad begins a five-match road stint.

The Hurricanes sit two wins clear on top of the table having started the campaign with five consecutive victories, and have a quick turnaround against the Melbourne Renegades at Marvel Stadium on Monday night.
