A seven-goal haul by wily veteran Michael Cassidy got DOSA over the line in a top-of-the-ladder thriller against OHA at the TCA ground on Saturday and elevated the Roosters to top dog in the Old Scholars.
The two sides were even on 40 premiership points going into their round 12 showdown, with Ships on top with a superior percentage.
The game was a heart-stopper – scores were level deep in time-on in the final term until the Roosters kicked the winner.
DOSA coach Daniel Willing was super-proud of his men.
“We regard the [OHA] as the best team in the competition - they have proven that over a period of time,” Willing said.
“The last time we played them over at Geilston Bay they gave us a lesson and we’ve had a bit of a chip on our shoulder about that.
“We needed to make sure we came here and played our best footy because any less was not going to get it done.
“To the boys’ credit, they were pretty consistent with their effort levels all day and we got away with a win.”
The four-points might be the advantage DOSA needs to claim top spot at the business end of the year and a home final.
Cassidy was the difference between the competition’s stand-out teams.
“At nearly 39-years-of-age, he was unbelievable up forward,” Willing said.
“He’s taken 15 marks and kicked seven, so he was a beacon up forward.”
DOSA’s midfielders Scotty Jones, Harry Loveless, Chris Ransom and Zac Droan responded brilliantly after the Roosters’ 50-point round seven drubbing.
In other games, Hutchins beat St Virgils by 27 points at Queenborough, and University beat Richmond by 80 points at Uni Oval.
