North Hobart’s women’s cricket team will have a different look this weekend and it’s all for a good cause.
The Demons’ Second Grade will wear shorts instead of traditional playing pants in their clash with New Town on Sunday as part of the SPEAK UP! Stay ChatTY game at the TCA Ground.
According to its website, SPEAK UP! Stay ChatTY “works to promote positive mental health and prevent suicide by normalising conversations about mental health and encouraging people to seek help when they need it”.
It’s hoped the game will continue to help raise awareness in the local community.
NHCC Club Engagement Manager Lyndon Beard is excited about the game being held for the first time.
“North Hobart Cricket Club are thrilled to be supporting Stay ChatTY this season.
“By working together North Hobart CC and Stay ChatTy have the opportunity to continue to raise much-needed awareness around mental health in our community.
“The wearing of shorts aligns perfectly with the Stay ChatTy logo and symbolises being brave, speaking up and looking out for each other.
“We hope that by encouraging brave conversations within our sporting organisation and sharing the Stay ChatTY message, we’ll be helping our members to learn more about mental health and wellbeing, where to get support, and how to help out a teammate.”
Founder of SPEAK UP! Stay ChatTY Mitch McPherson threw his support behind the event.
“Sporting Clubs are such an integral part of the social fabric of our community. Its where people are already coming together and building a strong sense of connection and support,” McPherson said.
“Working alongside the North Hobart Cricket Club in prioritising mental health and encouraging more conversations among club members and their broader community is such a powerful way to continue to break down stigma and create a positive difference.
“We appreciate the work the North Hobart Cricket Club have invested into making this round possible, and for believing in Stay ChatTY’s mission.
“It’s opportunities like this that make all the difference.”
The game will be a T20 clash with play scheduled to start around 4.30pm.
