Teenage superstar Alice Capsey produced a one-woman demolition job for the Melbourne Stars as she single-handedly took down the Hobart Hurricanes to keep her team’s flickering WBBL finals hopes alive in Tasmania.
In one of the more stunning innings this season the English 18-year-old smashed an unbeaten 80 off just 52 balls and scored all bar three of the final 20 runs to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat.
Coming in at number three as the Stars tried to pass Hobart’s 8-130, Capsey batted on as wickets fell around her and the run rate escalated.
The equation reached 20 off the final two overs which in the end proved a doddle for Capsey who smashed two sixes off Nicola Carey to turn the tide her team’s way.
Then, needing just three of the final over, Capsey played an audacious lap sweep for four off the very first ball from Hayley Jensen to secure her team’s fifth win of the season, with five balls to spare.

It was Capsey’s highest WBBL score, her first-half century and came after Annabel Sutherland continued her golden run, taking 3-18, to give her 18 wickets for the tournament, as well as a team-high 273 runs.
The victory kept the Stars in touch with the top four with three games left to play, although even three wins would require results to go their way to reach the finals.
For Hobart it was a missed chance to put a gap on the chasing pack but the Hurricanes now are locked with three other teams on 13 points.
Their saving grace is they also have three games left to secure a finals berth.
Outstanding.
