The truth about David Warner’s missing baggy green has finally been revealed and it’s quite embarrassing for the retiring opener.

The retiring opening batsman caused quite the stir when he appealed for help on social media to find his baggy greens on the eve of his last ever Test at the SCG.

Warner said a backpack containing his tattered old baggy green worn for the majority of his career and a newer one, had been misplaced somewhere in transit from Melbourne to Sydney ahead of the New Year’s Test.

A day out from the match, Warner took to Instagram to reveal “someone has taken my backpack out of my actual luggage which had my backpack and my girls’ presents in there. “Inside this backpack were my baggy greens. That’s sentimental to me and it’s something I’d love to have back in my hands walking out there come this week,” he said.

Warner walked out with a replacement baggy green to start the Test, but the hat was miraculously found a matter of days later with Warner able to finish the Sydney Test with the iconic cap.

But that’s where the mystery took a twist as the bag was found at the team hotel in Sydney with all the contents, including the baggy green, inside.

Cricket Australia confirmed to news.com.au that the bag had been found within the hotel.

This is despite Warner initially stating the backpack had been removed from his luggage, but Cricket Australia confirmed this wasn’t the case.

Instead it had simply been misplaced — and not discovered in an extensive search of the team hotel.

Now The Age reports the bag in question was always with the rest of the team’s luggage in the team’s room at their Sydney hotel. A total of 64 bags made the trip from Melbourne to Sydney.

Team sources told The Age the backpack had been packed in a “half coffin” cricket bag, which caused confusion given Warner thought it would be in a larger “full coffin” bag.

The bag containing Warner’s backpack and caps was in a different part of the room to his other bags, and was placed with its “David Warner” label tucked underneath, meaning it went unseen during a frantic search.

So it appears the missing baggy green was a case of someone just not looking hard enough.

Pat Cummins said after Australia wrapped up a 3-0 series sweep against Pakistan: “It’s probably not my story to tell. Maybe talk to Davey.”

Warner then strolled into the post-match press conference, with the baggy green safely atop his head, and suggested questions should be asked of the team’s security.

“You’re going to have to ask security. I wish I’d played a prank like that,” he said.

“You’ll have to ask Frank (Dimasi) or Stu Bailey (security staff). I literally got it handed to me and there was nothing (said to me). That’s legitimate.”

There has been some speculation Warner’s cap went missing as part of a team prank, while his wife Candice wouldn’t throw anyone under the bus.

“It was an unbelievable week,” she told Sunrise.

“But, I mean, that’s a question for, you know, security, management.

“The end of the day, he got his Baggy Greens back. That’s the main thing.”

It was an eventful week for Warner, who arrived at the SCG on Friday in a helicopter as he made a mad dash from his brother’s wedding to play for the Sydney Thunder in their loss to the Sydney Sixers.
