TWO of Tasmania’s emerging cricket talents will take their skills to the national stage after being selected to take part in this season’s under-19 WBBL exhibition matches.

Amy Smith, who last season became the state’s youngest ever senior player and Ella Marsh — daughter of former Tigers coach and now women’s assistant Dan — are among 24 of the country’s best young stars who will feature in three games at Phillip Oval in Canberra on November 23 and 24.

The duo, who are affiliated with the Hobart Hurricanes, have been picked in the Ellyse Perry squad of 12, which squares off against a Meg Lanning XI.

Smith was just 14 when she made her Tigers debut in the WNCL against Victoria in February, where she took 1-22 from six overs.

The leg spinner also snared 1-14 from five overs and scored 10 not out in a victory against Western Australia.

Nine contracted WBBL players have been named in the two squads, including Tess Flintoff, Stella Campbell, Hannah Darlington and Phoebe Litchfield, who have all taken to the field for their respective clubs in this year’s competition.

“Now in its third year, these matches continue to play in important role in the development of the best underage talent in the country,” Cricket Australia Female High Performance coach Leah Poulton said.

“The female player pathway is the strongest it has even been, and these matches certainly contribute to that along with regular overseas tours for the Australia under-19 side.

“Just recently we’ve seen how well players such as Phoebe Litchfield, Stella Campbell and Tess Flintoff have done stepping up to the WBBL which is the leading women’s domestic cricket league in the world, so it’s evident that the pathway is doing what its designed to do.

“It’s a really important period coming up for this age group with the ICC recently confirming an under-19 World Cup and another Australia under-19 tour scheduled for next year. The players will definitely be out to impress.”
