An unassuming night of Division 3-4 winter indoor cricket took an unexpected turn when Sri Lankan great Lasith Malinga turned up as a fill-in.
Malinga was sporting his trademark golden locks as his notorious sling action sent down some thunderbolts at the Springvale Indoor Centre in Melbourne’s southeast on Tuesday night.
Malinga figured for ‘IMF United’ who were playing ‘Hit & Run’, with Malinga’s side winning 105-78.
The white-ball great could be seen delivering a vicious bouncer — and having a chuckle afterwards — and also piling on the runs, finding gaps with bat in hand in footage of the match.
Malinga took 1-16 from his two overs with the ball and made 25 runs with the bat. His strike rate of 250 was the highest of the match but he missed out on player of the match honours.
Division 3-4 is the second rung of six-a-side Tuesday night indoor cricket in Springvale, below Division 1-2.
Malinga took 546 international wickets across his career, as well as a further 1093 scalps across First-Class, List A and T20 cricket. He played in the Big Bash for the Melbourne Stars in BBL 02 and BBL 03.
Malinga was the Mumbai Indians’ bowling coach in this year’s Indian Premier League.
More to come.
