The woman at the centre of the sexting scandal that prompted the resignation of Australia‘s ex-cricket captain Tim Paine has been told to prepare to stand trial on stealing charges.
Renee Ferguson, 48, reportedly dialled into Hobart’s Magistrates Court on Thursday via video link and informed the court she had parted ways with a high-profile lawyer who had been representing her.
She told the court she wanted to maintain her plea of not guilty to allegations she took $5600 from Cricket Tasmania, The Australian reported.
Ms Ferguson was told she would need to have her new legal team appointed and briefed by next Friday.
Her former barrister, Greg Barns, SC, confirmed he was no longer working for Ms Ferguson and declined to comment further.
A Cricket Tasmania spokeswoman declined to comment when contacted by NCA NewsWire.
Ms Ferguson is also involved in separate proceedings before the Federal Court where she is suing Cricket Tasmania over sexual harassment allegations.
She worked for the state’s cricket organisation from 2015 and 2017.
Paine quit in November 2021 after lewd texts he had allegedly sent became public.
