Reigning MVP Belinda Vakarewa injured as Hurricanes handed a WBBL scorching from Perth

In a Big Bash tournament that continues to go from bad to worse, Hobart has suffered a hammering from the Perth Scorchers while losing their strike bowler to injury in the process.

HOBART’S horror WBBL tournament slumped to a new low with a 10-wicket hiding from Perth and the side’s reigning MVP hobbling off injured.

The Hurricanes were mauled by a rampaging Sophie Devine, with the Kiwi star pounding 87 not out from just 53 balls as the Scorchers mowed down their 135-run target in the 15th over at North Sydney Oval.

Devine had plenty of support from partner in crime Beth Mooney, who was made to look more pedestrian in her unbeaten 48 from 36 deliveries.

Hobart’s attack had no answers for the dominant duo once strike bowler Belinda Vakarewa, last year’s third-highest wicket taker in the competition, was unable to complete her first over.

Vakarewa looked in discomfort after sending down her first four balls and pulled up quickly after her fifth with a foot or ankle problem and left the field.

Devine and Mooney made sure they took full advantage, with Devine in particular pouncing on anything remotely loose.

She cracked eight boundaries and five sixes, taking down impressive young spinner Amy Smith (0-36 from two) while Australian all-rounder Nicola Carey (0-26 from three) also failed to have an impact.

Devine ended the run chase in style by clubbing Chloe Tryon (0-34) for six.

Earlier an all too familiar struggle with the bat cost the Hurricanes the chance to post a more competitive total.

Carey (36 from 31) showed flashes of her best at the top of the order but received little support, with Rachel Priest unable to get off the leash and Tryon continuing her lean tournament.

Emma Thompson provided a late spark in hitting two boundaries and a six in her 23-ball 33 not out.

Hobart finishes its season against the Sydney Thunder on Sunday.
