THE Hobart Hurricanes have topped the list in a national survey to win the team with the strongest emotional connection to its fans, while the Tim Paine-led Australian cricket team was seventh.
A survey released by True North Research found that the Hurricanes were the league team with the strongest emotional connection to their members and supporters.
It revealed that the connection to our national teams is as strong today as it was twelve months ago, despite the fact that some teams have not played for a significant period of time and may not do so for a while yet.

Georgie Maynard, director of True North, said: “As national sporting bodies wrestle with big issues like moving World Cups, finding international teams to play, and how to squeeze in international matches after delayed league seasons, it will bring them comfort to know that Australians have not abandoned their national teams.”
Australia women’s teams dominated the survey, filling the top four spots for recognition by the public.
The women’s cricket team soared to the top of the ladder after winning the T20 World Cup in March 2020, followed by the Matildas soccer team, Australian women’s Rugby 7s, and the Diamonds netball team.
The Australian men’s T20 cricket team was the best of the men’s teams, followed by the Boomers men’s basketball team and then Paine’s men’s Test team.
The men’s Kangaroos rugby league national team, Socceroos national men’s soccer team, and Wallaroos women’s rugby league national team rounded out the top 10.
