Mitchell Starc strikes back at Indian young star Yashasvi Jaiswal with first-ball peach

The rowdy crowd won’t forget an opening ball which showcased the fascinating rivalry developing between the wily old quick Mitchell Starc and the lippy young champion Yashasvi Jaiswal, writes ROBERT CRADDOCK.

Starc dismisses Jaiswal with FIRST BALL!

“That one fast enough for you pal?’’

Australia’s pink ball prince Mitchell Starc never uttered these words as Yashasvi Jaiswal left the crease, a stunning first-ball-of-the-innings victim to a hooping away swinger which struck him in front.

But Starc would not have been human if they never flashed through his mind.

The boisterous crowd will never forget that opening ball which showcased the fascinating rivalry developing between the wily old quick and the lippy young champion.

Who knows where things will be by the fifth Test in Sydney?

Jaiswal famously quipped “you’re coming too slow”’’ to Starc in the first Test in Perth as he romped to a second innings century.

But Starc had his say with a wicked 140.3kph pipe-opener which had too much pace and movement for a young man still setting his radar for the day.

The fearless kid versus the old sage. What a contest.

Jaiswal is already being lauded as a fully franked superstar - and he effectively won the first Test for his team - but time will tell whether his tasty little quips backfire.

It’s just so rare for batsmen to wind up the opposition because they only have to make one mistake to fail.

Trend-bucker Matt Hayden once boldly took on the world’s fastest bowler Shoaib Akhtar in Sharjah after Akhtar sledged Hayden on his way to the crease.

Hayden counted aloud Akhtar’s deliveries, claiming he would last only three overs in the steambath conditions.

”You’ve got 18 balls to do it,’’ Hayden told The Grade Cricketer podcast he said to Akhtar.

”You’ve got three overs because you’re going to turn into a marshmallow that’s been left on the plane too long, and is going to be dripping down, and I’m going to be the one at the other end of those 18 balls, that’s going to be mopping it up.”

Every time Mitchell Starc has taken a wicket with the first ball of a Test

Shane Warne once welcomed his South African bunny Daryll Cullinan to the crease with the words “I’ve been waiting two years for this’’ to which Cullinan said “and it looks like you have spent most of that time eating.’’

And there was the time when English skipper Mike Atherton was feeling worryingly flat at the crease against Pakistan and deliberately started a fight with combative keeper Moin Khan by spinning on his heel and saying “I don’t want to hear one word from you today … okay?’’ Moin erupted and Atherton was on his way.

But generally much of the taunting in cricket comes from bowlers to batsmen fortified by the knowledge they have many more chances to succeed.

Starc again proved Australia’s pink ball champion in the opening session, a status which has its own charm given when the concept started he had no love of the pink ball and day-night cricket. But it’s grown on him!

India’s collapse in the first session – just as they were starting to look comfortable - might well be the type of volatile swing we see throughout this epic series where the bowlers from both outfits are stronger than their batsmen.

An epic month awaits us.
