Less than a year and a half after being axed from Cricket Tasmania, Dan Marsh could be coming back

SIXTEEN months after being sacked as coach of the Tigers, Dan Marsh could be about to return to the fold at Cricket Tasmania as the Tigers’ 2018-19 schedule is released.

SIXTEEN months after being sacked from his post as coach of the Tigers, Dan Marsh could be about to return to the fold at Cricket Tasmania.

Marsh, who took over from Tim Coyle at the end of the 2012-13 season, had his contract terminated last February with more than a year remaining and three games left in the 2016-17 campaign.

The 44-year-old has returned to coaching in the past 12 months — he oversaw Cricket Australia’s under-16 side in a series against Pakistan in April — and has been appointed as coach of North Hobart in the CTPL.

Now he is in the mix to rejoin the CT ranks as an assistant to new women’s head coach Salliann Briggs.

CT chief Nick Cummins said a final decision on the position could be confirmed as soon as the end of this week, and confirmed to the Mercury Marsh was one of the candidates.

“We haven’t made a decision on the assistant coach yet, we are currently interviewing,” Cummins said.

“Dan is one of the candidates, but at this stage he is not the chosen candidate, but he is certainly in the mix.

“[A decision is expected] possibly this week, otherwise early next week. We are into the last stages of the interview process.

“There are two roles, there is also the women’s pathway role, which is coaching the underage program and we are looking at coaches from around Australia and around the world.

“That is the same with the men’s program as well, looking at the other assistant coach which we have been working on, we are taking a global view of all our coaching positions.

“For us, it is really important to have diversity, and I don’t just mean gender but I mean diversity of experience. It is good to have a combination of local, national and international knowledge in your program.”

Cummins also had no concerns with the Tigers’ tough start to next summer, following the release of the domestic fixture.

The Sheffield Shield finalists will be on the road for the first three games, with clashes against Queensland, Western Australia and NSW in a hectic three-week period.

Hobart has also landed a three-day tour match between a CA XI and Sri Lanka starting on January 17.

“We are quite happy with that, we had quite a similar fixture last year where we came home with a wet sail with a number of home games in a row.

“If we can have a good solid pre-Christmas period, that sets us up for the second half of the year.

“We want as much quality cricket content as we can get, to get a tour match is great for our members and great for cricket fans in Hobart.

“We have had a pretty good relationship with Sri Lankan cricket over the last few years so it’s a nice way to bring that relationship together.”
