Hurricane succumbs to lingering back complaint

One of the Hobart Hurricanes’ big-name signings has dropped a bombshell, revealing he is pulling the pin on his Big Bash days.

HURRICANE Johan Botha will play his last BBL match on Wednesday night against his former side before retiring due to ongoing back issues.

The former South African captain joined Hobart on a two year deal this summer, and has been an integral part of the side’s stunning 8-1 start to the season.

However after entering the tournament racing the clock to be fit because of a serious back injury, Botha has decided to call time on his Big Bash days against the Sydney Sixers at the SCG.

The Hurricanes camp in Sydney confirmed the retirement, although it is understood Botha is yet to inform the playing group and will do so at the conclusion of Wednesday night’s clash.

Botha, 36, played five Tests, 78 One Day Internationals and made 40 Twenty20 appearances for his country, forging a career as a crafty, economical spinner who was more than handy with the bat.

He began his BBL career with the Adelaide Strikers, before joining the Sixers and then signing with Hobart.

Botha has captured nine wickets this tournament, including best figures of 3-22 against the Sixers at Blundstone Arena.

A replacement for Botha is yet to be finalised, but the Mercury understands the squad will be bolstered by the addition of Tasmanian off spinning all-rounder Jarrod Freeman, who is set to be named as a replacement for Australian Test captain Tim Paine.
