Glenn Maxwell suffers fractured finger in IPL

He was accused of having a holiday at the IPL so bad was his output and now an Australian star’s tournament is over because of a bad injury.

Glenn Maxwell couldn’t get in the runs at the IPL and now his tournament has been ended by a broken finger.

The star Australian all-rounder was accused of using the Indian tournament as a “holiday” by legend Virender Sehwag but now the holiday is over.

Maxwell missed Punjab Kings’ big win over the Chennai Super Kings, with the injury news revealed at the toss by Kings skipper Shreyas Iyer.

He called the injury “unfortunate” before Maxwell’s Australian white-ball teammate, Marcus Stoinis, said it was “pretty bad” and would likely end his tournament.

“He broke his finger just before the last game at training,” he said.

“He didn’t think it was too bad, but it ended up getting pretty bad. He had scans and the results weren’t great.

“So unfortunately for Maxi, I think it’s likely he’s out for the tournament.”

Iyer said replacements were likely for the Kings, suggesting the injury was indeed tournament-ending.

“It’s very unfortunate that he’s got a fractured finger,” Shreyas said at the toss.

“To be honest, we haven’t decided about the replacements yet so far, but we are pretty strong in our team’s mindset and what we have outside of our playing XI. We’ve got varieties of players who can win you matches, so we’re going to stick to that as much as possible.”

Maxwell, who has been an IPL mainstay and made close to $20m during his time in the tournament, has had a shocking run this season.

He’s made only 48 runs in six innings, including single-digit scores in each of his last four games, and has taken only four wickets.

It’s an effort well short of that expected for a man paid $770,000 this season.

It’s unclear when Maxwell will return to cricket.
