George Bailey was confirmed as Australia’s new selector on Wednesday night, but won’t start in the position until he is fully retired from the game in early February.
The only question mark over the Tasmanian’s appointment to a three-man panel was how CA would manage the issue of his contract with the Tigers and Hobart Hurricanes.
Cricket Australia’s board in 2007 knocked back Darren Lehmann as a selector because he was still playing domestically for South Australia.
However, a sensible compromise has been reached, with Bailey permitted to play out the BBL season with the Hurricanes before retiring from all forms of the game.

“George’s international and domestic playing career speaks for itself. His extensive experience across all formats, and deep knowledge of T20 cricket, will be invaluable as we head into a home T20 World Cup and beyond.
“We’re also excited about the broader impact George will have on Australian cricket as we work to connect more closely with players, coaches and high performance staff across the country.”
