D’Arcy Short heads to India after scoring unbeaten century for Hobart Hurricanes

Hurricanes’ star D’Arcy Short is heading to India as part of Australia’s one-day squad full of confidence after burying his spin demons to become just the fourth player in Big Bash history to score multiple centuries.

Fresh from conquering his last Big Bash hurdle, D’Arcy Short will rejoin the Australian one squad brimming with confidence he has rediscovered his destructive best.

The two time reigning BBL player of the year became just the fourth player in the history of the competition to score multiple centuries on Sunday night, crashing an unbeaten 103 in Hobart’s eight run win over the Perth Scorchers.

It was the first time the explosive left-hander had passed 50 against his state teammates, giving him the perfect boost ahead of the brief tour of India next week.

Short battled through a testing period against spinners Fawad Ahmed and Ashton Agar, with his half century coming from 44 balls, before unleashing late as the Hurricanes blasted 76 runs from the last five overs to reach 2-180.

Given any opportunity he gets in India will come in the middle order, it was a strong test of character for Short to prove he can expand his game beyond dominating when the field is up.

“I felt like I started off well, it was just when the field went out and the two spinners were bowling I went away from what I was doing,” Short said.

“It was good to finish off the way we did and get us up to 180.

“I’m looking forward to getting over there [India] and hopefully, if I get an opportunity, I can take it and run with it.

“It was good to go there [the IPL two years ago] and I have had a couple more tours. I have good experience there now and know how the pitches play.

“I’m a bit more confident against the spinners as well.”

Short joined Usman Khawaja, Craig Simmons and Luke Wright in posting two BBL centuries, and did it in style by ramping Chris Jordan over the fence off the last ball of the innings.

It was his seventh six — he added three boundaries in his 70-ball knock — and was remarkably the first time he has attempted the shot in the Big Bash.

“I didn’t think I was getting it to start with, Fawad and Agar were bowling well and it got to the last over and I definitely thought I was going to get stranded [in the 90s] again,” said Short, who rode his luck by being dropped five times during his innings.

“They were bowling well and hitting the hole, I felt like the only way I was going to get him off the line was to ramp.

“Funny enough, I have only ever done it in club cricket once.

“To be honest I just like scoring runs but scoring a hundred against teammates I play with during the year is definitely special.”
