Caleb Jewell in sparkling form as he smashes amazing CTPL Twenty20 century

With the Big Bash League just around the corner, Caleb Jewell has delivered selectors a timely reminder of his prowess with the bat.

HURRICANE Jewell hit Glenorchy between the eyes on Saturday while it was calm day for Test skipper Tim Paine in the CTPL’s Twenty20 gala day.

North Hobart punisher Caleb Jewell taught Glenorchy’s bowling line-up a lesson it won’t soon forget, smashing an incredible 139 runs off 52 deliveries, hitting seven boundaries and an amazing 15 sixes for a blistering strike rate of 267.

That was the bulk of the ladder leader’s 6-238 at New Town Oval, and in reply the Magpies stuttered to 128 off 19.2 overs, with Demon Alex Pyecroft snaring 3-27.

Earlier in the day, North Hobart took New Town to school, dismissing the home side for 91 off the back of paceman Iain Carlisle (4-19 off four overs), followed by Jewell bludgeoning 45 off 18 balls in a comprehensive eight-wicket win.

At the Twin Ovals, University got home in a thriller over Greater Northern but Paine had a lean day with the bat, scoring one run off four balls before he was run out by Sam Elliston-Buckley.

James Faulkner inflicted pain on the Launceston-based team by sending both openers Oliver Wood and Sam O’Mahony back to the shed for ducks for a return of 2-8 off four overs.

Lindisfarne made short work of South Hobart-Sandy Bay at Queenborough, as Matt Wilkie (4-17 off four) suffocated the Sharks with pin-point bowling and Mac Wright (77 runs off 65 balls) feasted on their bowling in a seven-wicket win.

When Lindisfarne met Clarence in the earlier game, Lightning opener Charlie Wakim (98 off 62) was sensational but fell agonisingly short of what would have been a well-deserved century as they compiled 3-215 and then shot down the Roos (6-193).

Beau Webster blasted 59 off 43 in Kingborough’s 7-133 but he was outdone by Jake Doran’s cavalier knock of 88 off 54 balls, including eight times to the fence and three times over it as Uni replied with 2-134. Paine was not required to bat.

But New Town bounced back in game two. It sent Glenorchy packing for 9-118, with Magpie Jake Williams top scoring with 49 off 45.

The Bucks dropped only one wicket on the way to 119, with opener Tafara Mupariwa (49 off 46) leading the way and Sam Wright (31 off 22) and Mitch Owen (30 off 25) doing the rest.

The CTPL will hold another T20 gala round next weekend – one of one three rounds remaining before the Christmas/New Year break.
