SuperCoach BBL: Top trade targets for Sydney Thunder round 6 double
Sydney Thunder is the only team that plays twice in SuperCoach BBL round 6. David Warner is one of the best trade targets, but who else should you bring in?
SuperCoach BBL
Don't miss out on the headlines from SuperCoach BBL. Followed categories will be added to My News.
Coming off a stirring win over Perth Scorchers, Sydney Thunder will become the focus for SuperCoaches heading into their round 6 double.
And, there’s plenty to dissect with Daniel Sams and Cameron Bancroft set to miss after their horror collision in the field in Perth.
Sams and Bancroft will both miss round 6, so you’ll have to move them on if you tried to plan ahead and went early.
That will present opportunities for several SuperCoach cheapies to step up and emerge as heroes on the double.
We rate the priority trade targets below.
Wes Agar BWL
Came crashing back to earth in round 5 when he scored four points against the Scorchers. But, let’s forgive Agar for that. The Thunder needs him to be one of their main men with Sams out and he should get opportunities to bowl surge and death overs. The Thunder plays its next two matches at the Gabba and ENGIE Stadium, two pitches which should suit Agar. He’s priced at $159k.
David Warner BAT
Batters can always be hit and miss, but it’s hard to ignore Warner’s recent form. He has scored 116 and 74 SuperCoach points in his last two games thanks to knocks of 86 not out and 49 runs. Both times he has had close DRS decisions go in his favour which were the difference between a great score and a low one. That’s how volatile scoring for batters can be. But he’s set to be popular and could burn you if you fade him.
Chris Green BWL
Green can be a rollercoaster as a more defensive spinner (he scored 106 in round 1 then 0 in round 2), but being elevated in the batting order to No.7 this summer increases his SuperCoach ceiling. He’s got two hundreds in five outings after scoring a season-best 113 SuperCoach in the Thunder’s win over Perth. Green was a bit lucky with a couple of his wickets in that game, but his role is undeniably good for SuperCoach. Anyone batting in the top seven and bowling four guaranteed overs is.
Tom Andrews BWL
With doubts over when Tanveer Sangha will return from injury, Andrews has come into vogue as one of the best cheapies from the Thunder. The left-arm spinner has 1-34, 1-32 and 1-26 in his three Thunder appearances. Watch the team sheets to make sure Sangha isn’t back before committing, but he seems to be a reliable 25-40 point scorer most games and at just $64k can free up cash for some bigger names.
Lockie Ferguson BWL
The Kiwi speedster will soon depart the BBL for the UAE, but Ferguson has proven his value in a short stint in lime green. Ferguson took six wickets in his first three Thunder games before a couple of quieter outings. He’s expected to play both games of the double before he leaves the BBL and will need to step up again in the absence of Sams. After two wicketless matches, you sense he’ll want a big finish to his Thunder stint. Ferguson is a genuine captaincy option for round 6.
Matthew Gilkes WKP-BAT
If you have played SuperCoach BBL before, it’s likely you know Matthew Gilkes well. He’s been the player we have been hoping to be our breakout wicketkeeper for several seasons without success. Could you really go there again? He’s not going to take the gloves with Sam Billings staying until the end of the BBL, so you would be committing to Gilkes as a batter alone. As promising as his 43 from 36 balls against Perth was, there are better options.
Sam Billings WKP-BAT
Billings is one of the best middle-order batters in the BBL – but the middle order is the worst place for a batter to be to score SuperCoach points. There’s a chance that Bancroft being out means he gets elevated in the batting order, but I would be hesitant to pick Billings if he’s still batting at No.5. That could mean he misses out on a hit or has limited overs to score SuperCoach points and would be left relying on his work behind the stumps.
Nathan McAndrew BWL
McAndrew seems the most likely replacement for Daniel Sams while he recovers from concussion. He was dropped for Agar after scoring 20 and 3 SuperCoach points in the first two rounds and conceding 0-81 across those two games. McAndrew scored 46 or better four times last season but is only a player to target if you’re short on funds or desperate for a POD.
Jason Sangha BAT
Sangha made a strong impression on his return to the Thunder side, scoring 59 SuperCoach points after a return of 33 from 27 balls and 1-9 against the Stars. After relying on five bowlers in the early rounds, Warner made a point of turning to Sangha in that match. It worked when he removed Maxwell, only for Sangha to injure his bicep on the next ball. Make sure he’s over that problem before you jump on. He hasn’t played since.
TIM’S TOP FIVE TRADE TARGETS
1. Lockie Ferguson
2. Wes Agar
3. David Warner
4. Chris Green
5. Jason Sangha (if named)
