1. Jason Sangha injury blow, Russell to depart soon

Thousands of KFC SuperCoaches will have to take a significant hit on Sydney Thunder captain Jason Sangha after he broke his collarbone in the club’s Round 2 loss to Melbourne Renegades. The Thunder are yet to decide on a rehab plan for Sangha, but have named Chris Green as interim captain in his absence. He took charge in Tuesday night’s second match of the Round 2 double against Adelaide Strikers. Sangha still featured in more than 8500 KFC SuperCoach teams in Round 2 and was set to drop by about $38k after a round score of 12. Meanwhile, Andre Russell will depart after Round 4 and be replaced at the Renegades by New Zealand opener Martin Guptill.

2. Who is Perth’s new English recruit?

David Payne. We didn’t know a lot about him either, so you’re excused there. But we’ve done our homework and he’s a 31-year-old English seamer who has more than 150 T20 wickets to his name. He’s a left-arm paceman, so comes in as a like-for-like replacement for Tymal Mills who had to withdraw from BBL12 for family reasons. He’s unlikely to budge Jason Behrendorff, Jhye Richardson or Andrew Tye from the side in their current form but could jostle with Matthew Kelly for the fourth seamer spot if Perth goes down that path as it did in Round 1. He took 18 wickets from nine matches in this year’s Vitality Blast. Perth doesn’t have a double until Round 9 so there’s ample time to assess Payne’s role and job security.

3. When do we start planning for the Aussie Test stars?

It’s never too early to plan ahead in KFC SuperCoach BBL – especially when a number of big names are due back at the same time. The third and final Test between Australia and South Africa is due to finish on January 8, one day before the start of Round 9 in KFC SuperCoach BBL. So, it appears the Aussie contingent, in particular Steve Smith (Sixers), David Warner (Thunder), Alex Carey (Strikers), Marnus Labuschagne (Heat), Cam Green (Scorchers) and Usman Khawaja (Thunder) are likely to really make their mark in KFC SuperCoach from Round 10 – a round when every team plays once. There are a no double-games the following round either, before the Heat and Scorchers feature twice in Round 12. Have these guys in mind as we come out the other side of Christmas. Have Michael Neser in mind now, though, with the $107,900 bargain back with the Heat and set to play in, at least, the first of Brisbane’s two games in Round 3.

4. Sean Abbott averages 84 at the SCG and 77 against Melbourne Stars, are we dreaming thinking we get him cheaply for Round 5?

Probably. It looked certain Abbott’s price would be in free fall when he entered his last over in Round 1 on less than 20 KFC SuperCoach points. Three 20th-over wickets later and his price went up by more than $4k to almost $210k. Abbott is a KFC SuperCoach stud who can score well regardless of whether he has a double game round or not. Opportunities to buy the Sixers star for less than $180k are rare. Last season he scored eight points in Round 2 yet after starting at $169k, his price never got lower than $179k during the season. He’s such a consistent performer who can have a big impact with bat, ball and in the field. And this is all before we mention how much he loves playing against the Stars. Abbott has posted scores of 61, 116, 85 and 108 in rounds where he has faced the Sixers’ Round 4 opponent.

5. Just how much will Ben McDermott’s price fall?

Ben McDermott started BBL12 as one of the most expensive players in KFC SuperCoach at $211k. But his price has already fallen by about $42k after opening BBL12 with scores of 17 and in rounds 1 and 2. Hobart doesn’t have a double until Round 8 and McDermott – who averaged 73 KFC SuperCoach points a game last summer – should be ripe for picking in about round 7 or 8 when his price will bottom out. At its current trajectory, KFC SuperCoaches could get McDermott for $100k or more than his starting price. Just be mindful one big score (he scored over 200 twice last season) will cause his decline to stop. Brisbane paceman Xavier Bartlett is another player looking at a sharp decrease over several rounds after being taken apart in Round 1.

6. Who are the cash cows to target?

Whether to target players with upcoming doubles or bank cash cows will be a big question for KFC SuperCoaches in coming rounds. Hobart Hurricanes spinner Paddy Dooley is set to surge in price, already gaining $30k after his four-wicket performance against Perth Scorchers in Round 2 to eclipse $100k. The left-armer has plenty more money to be made in coming rounds, so missing out on an initial $40k jump shouldn’t be a deterrent. Webster’s price is another which is surging after bowling four overs in each of Melbourne Stars’ opening two games. A bye in Round 3 brought his cash generation to a brief halt but also means KFC SuperCoaches who want to target the Stars batter have time to jump on before he peaks. Webster is also a leading contender for the first batch of DPP updates before Round 5. If you don’t have Sixers spinner Izharulhaq Naveed, he should be top of your cash cow shopping list as he has a double in Round 5 and is still making money after scores of 61 and 66 to start his BBL career.

7. The Inglis factor

Perth Scorchers gloveman Josh Inglis was always going to be a popular starting selection at only $87k with a Round 2 double. That call paid off for thousands of coaches when Inglis scored 140 points in Round 2 to boost his price to $107k. SuperCoach Plus stats reveal Inglis is owned by every coach ranked in the top one per cent after two rounds, the only player selected in 100 per cent of those top-ranked sides. Jhye Richardson is second in 96 per cent teams and it’s no surprise they feature prominently in the rankings after his 260-point Round 2 total. Matt Short is third in 85 per cent of teams, while Marcus Stoinis (74 per cent) and Daniel Sams (69 per cent) round out the top five. It will be interesting to see how much that changes with Sams having a bye in Round 3. SuperCoach Plus allows you to sort by overall coaches choice (every registered team), top 1 per cent, top 5 per cent and top 10 per cent to filter ownership stats.

8. BYE, BYE SAMS?

Proven KFC SuperCoach points scorer Daniel Sams is the most traded out player ahead of Sydney Thunder’s Round 3 bye. As of 1pm Wednesday, Sams featured in 8.2 per cent of trades. Fellow Thunder quick Fazalhaq Farooqi is the next most traded player at 7.1 per cent, while Alex Hales (5.1 per cent) and Jason Sangha (5.1 per cent) are also being moved on. It’s no surprise to see Sangha being traded after he broke his collarbone, but Hales has a -14 break even. If you can hold him through Round 3, you’ll benefit from a decent price jump when he next plays.
