Round 3 BBL trade guide: Who to trade in to your SuperCoach team

We’re set for a bumper third round of SuperCoach, with three sides on the double. Expert TIM MICHELL runs through his biggest trade-in options.

There are three teams on the double in Round 3 of SuperCoach BBL – the Stars, Heat and Sixers.

With that in mind, now is the perfect time to deploy your first boost and bring in four top scorers to set your team up for the next few rounds.

Your trade plans will be complicated by the fact Melbourne Renegades have a bye before being on the double in round 4.

If you can get away with stashing a Renegade such as Will Sutherland this round, you’ll put your team ahead of the pack and save a trade next round.

Here are the best trade targets for round 3, which starts on Boxing Day when the Sixers host the Stars.

GLENN MAXWELL (STARS)

Scores so far: 40

Maxwell had some monster rounds last summer including a double where he scored 251 SuperCoach points. He’s got a sky-high ceiling and a great role batting in the top four and bowling every match. A straight swap from Matt Short? Maybe.

SPENCER JOHNSON (HEAT)

Scores so far: N/A

The Heat quick has missed the first two rounds with a toe injury but was considered close to playing against the Strikers. Johnson is one of the premier white-ball quicks in Australia and earns points through wickets and his miserly economy rate. Last season he took a wicket every 12 balls on average.

XAVIER BARTLETT (HEAT)

Scores so far: 90 and 50

He’s not cheap, but Bartlett has been one of the best-performed white-ball bowlers in domestic cricket in the past two summers. He’s added T20 variety to his regular ability to swing the ball and trouble batters.

TOM BANTON (HEAT)

Scores so far: N/A

The English keeper-batter has signed a short-term deal with the Heat as cover for the injured Tom Alsop. Banton scored 223 runs from seven innings with an insane strike rate of 177 when he last played for the Heat.

PAUL WALTER (HEAT)

Scores so far: 13 and 44

All-rounders are the fast track to big SuperCoach BBL scores and Walter has a monopoly on that role in Brisbane with Michael Neser still sidelined due to injury. Last summer, Walter had four rounds where he scored 82 or better and a season-high of 152 points.

USAMA MIR (STARS)

Scores so far: N/A

The Pakistani spinner is reasonably priced and set to assume the No. 1 spin mantle at the Stars from Boxing Day. Mir took five wickets in five games last season for the Stars including a haul of 3-19. He’s in good form and has been one of the leading spinners in the Champions T20 Cup.

JOSH PHILLIPE (SIXERS)

Scores so far: 25 and 40

One of the BBL’s most dynamic batters at his best and has shown glimpses of that quality in the Sixers’ first two games. Opens the batting and usually picks up a few dismissals behind the stumps keeping to one of the competition’s best bowling attacks. In SuperCoach BBL, every point counts.

BEN DWARSHUIS (SIXERS)

Scores so far: 71 and 107

Criminally underrated but firming as one of the must-have players for the round 3 double – especially if Sean Abbott is unavailable after being named in the Test squad. Dwarshuis has four wickets and has become a weapon with the bat, scoring 14 not out and 20 not out already in BBL14.

AKEAL HOSEIN (SIXERS)

Scores so far: 64

The West Indian boasts a superb BBL record, taking 17 wickets in 11 matches with a strike rate of 15. He wasted little time making his mark as a Sixer, removing Sam Konstas on his debut in magenta.

JACK EDWARDS (SIXERS)

Scores so far: 75 and 65

Edwards might have the best SuperCoach role in the BBL, batting at No. 3 and bowling important overs for the Sixers. He scored 77 or more in SuperCoach four times last season and is averaging 70 already in BBL14. Just watch for a possible Kurtis Patterson return at No. 3 before committing.

MITCH OWEN (HURRICANES)

Scores so far: 20 and 151

The Tasmanian joined Matthew Wade, D’Arcy Short and Ben McDermott on the list of Hurricanes century makers, announcing himself with a knock of 101 from 64 balls against Perth Scorchers. His price will surge after a SuperCoach score of 150 but there’s still money to make – and value to be had – by jumping on ahead of round 3.
