Australia’s pace bowling stocks shredded as Mitchell Starc joins Josh Hazlewood on sidelines

He’s smashing it in the BBL and leading scorer in the Sheffield Shield yet Hurricanes captain Matthew Wade has been overlooked again. ODI/T20 SQUAD REVEALED

Experts pick their bolters for the Australian Ashes squad

Australian fast bowler Mitch Starc has suffered a “substantial” pectoral injury and will miss the one-day and T20 tour of India but is expected to be ready for the World Cup later this year.

West Australian Ashton Turner was the stand-out inclusion in the 16-man squad named on Thursday with Big Bash leading-run scorer D’Arcy Short picked only as cover for Shaun Marsh, who is recovering from a hamstring injury but Hurricanes captain Matthew Wade has been overlooked again.

Mitch Marsh has been dropped after not playing a game in the recent ODI series against India, as has veteran bowler Peter Siddle.

DILEMMA: Cup the priority as selectors face balancing act

Selectors have stuck with Test batsmen Usman Khawaja despite speculation he could be left out to play in the remaining rounds of the Sheffield Shield.

Former Test keeper Matthew Wade has again been overlooked despite his stunning BBL and Sheffield Shield form, effectively ending any chance of him going to the World Cup, while there was also no room for Chris Lynn who last played ODI cricket against South Africa in November.

WA quick Nathan Coulter-Nile has been recalled after missing the recent ODI series against India, while Kane Richardson has been called up as a replacement for Starc.

Chairman of selectors Trevor Hohns said Starc suffered the injury while bowling on the final day of the second Test against Sri Lanka, in which he took 10 wickets, but should be available for Australia’s ODI matches against Pakistan in March and April.

“Unfortunately, scans have revealed that Mitchell Starc sustained a substantial tear to his left pec muscle while bowling on the final day of the Test match in Canberra,” Hohns said.

“This means he will be unavailable for the Tour of India, but we will instead target a return to play for the ODI Series against Pakistan in the UAE in March.

RATINGS: Australia’s biggest find of the summer

“This paves the way for Kane Richardson to come into the squad. Kane has been in outstanding form over the summer, including his recent performances in the BBL.

“Kane not only has experience playing ODI cricket for Australia, but he’s also performed well for his country when given the opportunity.”

NEW PODCAST: Cricket Unfiltered goes one-on-one with NSW bowling coach Andre Adams, who talks about how he managed to get Mitchell Starc back on track - and his work with Australian cricket’s newest star, Kurtis Patterson.

Hohns said Turner, who has been a standout for the Perth Scorchers in the BBL, had been on the selectors radar for “some time”.

“Ashton is a smart cricketer who reads the game well and provides us with another strong batting option. He’s been in good form over the summer, and he has an opportunity to put his case forward ahead of the World Cup,” he said.

Australia will play two T20s and five ODIs against India, in India, beginning on February 24.
