Australia’s newest national selector in the mix for Tasmania’s next Sheffield Shield clash on Friday

The Hurricanes’ coach is unsure what effect George Bailey’s move to the national selection panel will have on the team, but for now it is business as usual.

NATIONAL selector in waiting George Bailey is expected to be available for Tasmania’s upcoming Sheffield Shield clash — and the BBL campaign — with a decision on his long-term future yet to be discussed.

The former Australian white ball captain is tipped to be unveiled as the replacement for Greg Chappell in the coming days, joining Justin Langer and Trevor Hohns on the selection panel.

However it remains unclear what effect Bailey’s new role will have on his commitments with the Tigers and Hobart Hurricanes for the rest of the summer.

State and Hurricanes coach Adam Griffith is confident the destructive middle-order batsman will feature in the Big Bash as the Hurricanes chase a maiden domestic Twenty20 title, and declared the 37-year-old “in line” for Tasmania’s Shield match against Queensland starting on Friday.

“We will have a chat about what it looks like for him moving forward but no decision either way at this stage has been made,” Griffith said.

“We have to get some clarity from Cricket Australia about what it looks like when it is all announced.

“I think over the next few days it will really pan itself out to what we are going to do with it.

“Right now that’s the plan, at this stage we have two Shield games and then Big Bash and as far as I know we are full steam ahead with those.

“He is in line for this game coming up.”

Speculation surrounded Bailey’s future last summer when he dislocated his shoulder in the BBL semi-final loss to the Melbourne Stars, which ruled him out for the remainder of the season.

The veteran committed to the state’s three programs for 2019-20 — but beyond that remains unknown.

“He has been an unbelievable servant of Tasmanian cricket and when it does happen and he stops playing, we want to make sure it is the right time and for the right reasons and we will make sure it is the appropriate way,” Griffith said.

“We are not going to rush into anything like that, it is going to be a bigger decision that goes to ‘Bails’ and what is best for him and what’s best for the team and that sort of stuff.”
