‘Nail in the coffin’: England in total disarray as Aussies run riot

England has fallen in an almighty hole and is struggling just to make Australia bat again after a stunning late collapse at the Gabba.

England suffered an almighty late collapse to be hanging onto the second Ashes Test in Brisbane by a thread at stumps on day three.

After Australia’s long first innings finally came to an end on 511, England faced a tricky final period with the bat under the Gabba lights.

The tourists managed to put on 48 for the first wicket, by far their best opening stand of the series to date, before wickets starting falling at an alarming rate.

Less than 25 overs after Ben Duckett was the first batter to fall, the English had slumped to 6/134 at stumps, still 43 runs behind Australia’s first innings.

Mitchell Starc, comfortably the player of the series to date, followed up his team-high 77 runs from 141 deliveries to grab two more wickets in the final session to move to 18 for the series.

Scott Boland grabbed two more of his own in a chaotic final session that leaves England staring directly at a 2-0 series hole after as many Tests.

Ben Stokes faced 24 deliveries to reach four not out at the close, joined by Will Jacks on the same score, with the tourists facing a mammoth task even to make Australia bat again.
