Brighton yet to win a game in the SFL Premier League but Robins star Hugh Williams hopes it’s just around the corner

Brighton’s most experienced player Hugh Williams says the lessons learned in the first full round of the SFL Premier League season has boosted the confidence of the Robins as they prepare to meet Glenorchy for a second time at Pontville Oval on Saturday.

The Robins are yet to win a game but have pushed most teams for portions of games, some opposition coaches believing they will win a game sooner rather than later.

Williams said it had been quite a learning curve for the club.

“We have been competitive in patches,” he said.

“We’ve had some quarters where we have clearly not been up to it, and that’s our biggest challenge at the moment.

“The difference between our best and our worst is quite a gulf.

“So we are trying to minimise that.

“We have got full confidence that when we play to our structures and play as a team we can be competitive.”

Glenorchy is the next hill Brighton will try to climb, the Magpies having downed the Robins by 31 points under lights at Pontville in the inaugural Premier League game on April 4.

“In round one they showed us up a big-time,” Williams said.

“We narrowed the margin late but in reality it was probably a bigger margin than it suggested.

“We have learned a lot since then and we are ready for a hot contest.

“They pushed Clarence last week, and coming off a few losses they will be keen to rip into us.”

The lessons learned against the five former TSL clubs in Glenorchy, Lauderdale, Kingborough, Clarence and North Hobart will hold Brighton in good stead heading into the second rotation of games.

“For our group, playing those five games together, playing a full round now, we have learned what it takes,” Williams said.

“Now we’ve strung a few games together it’s about continuity and stability.

“We’ve brought in some players from the Community League and some from the Premier League, so it’s about playing to our structures and playing as a team.

“This week we will probably only have one change, which is beneficial for us to keep that continuity going.

“The boys are playing higher level _ it’s a high-speed, high-pressure, highly-skilled game _ so it’s also about continuing to get used to that.”
