Brighton playing-coach Brianna Oates is confident her side can put in an improved showing against Claremont on Saturday following a tough start to the season last week.

The Robins were defeated by 84-points in round one by New Norfolk after giving up a six-goal first-term at Boyer Oval while the Magpies secured a gritty one-point win over University.

In the game of the round in the SFLW Division 2 competition, Oates said the group had moved on pretty quickly from the game and didn’t want to let it ruin their season.

“New Norfolk were ready from the get go and we probably didn’t come with the same intent,” Oates said.

“They got an early lead and we just couldn’t claw that back. It happens in footy but we are not letting that loss set us back. We want to keep progressing and we don’t think that final score defines who we are as a team and we are not going to let it define our season.

“We are looking forward to facing Claremont. We have to focus on our contested footy and pressure because that’s where we feel we have a real strength.

“Claremont are always really competitive and bring a really tough and strong game style so we are looking to try and match that.”

The former Clarence TSLW player and Tasmania Devils star is in her first season as playing-coach and says despite the tough initiation last week, she is loving her time in the role so far.

In other division 2 SFLW games, Hutchins play University at Queenborough and the South East Suns host the Hounville Lions while Lauderdale and Cygnet faced off on Friday night.

New Norfolk have the bye.
