World heavyweight champion Tyson Fury wants to fight in Melbourne or Brisbane

After landing in Australia to support a boxing mate, the world champion Gypsy King could be back in August to fight.

Boxing world heavyweight champion Tyson Fury has confirmed he is “definitely keen” to fight in Australia, with two venues at the top of the pile.

Fury arrived in Melbourne on Sunday night to support close friend Joseph Parker in his fight against Queenslander Faiga “Django” Opelu at Margaret Court Arena on Wednesday.

The Englishman told NCA NewsWire that he would visit several Australian venues in coming days as his management also tries to secure an opponent for a bout Down Under.

“I’m definitely keen, it may even be my next fight, over here. I just haven’t got an opponent yet, so we’re going to figure it out,” Fury said.

“Over the next few days we’re going to be travelling around to a few different states and looking at some potential venues for my next fight.

“Australians are always crazy boxing fans, so it would be great to get the Gypsy King Down Under.”

It’s understood Brisbane’s Suncorp Stadium and Marvel Stadium in Melbourne are the leading contenders to host a Fury fight, with the 34-year-old saying he did not have a preference between the two venues “at the moment”.

“We’ll find out more over the coming weeks,” he said.

“I’m trying to fight in the UK (in the northern summer), I’m trying to fight here … I want to be a heavyweight champion that fights on different continents, not just at home or in America.

“So I am looking to travel up and down and fight in different places, so coming somewhere near you soon.”

Former AFL footballers Cameron Mooney and Tom Bellchambers are on the card for Wednesday night’s event, with Fury joking the former Bombers ruckman was the “uglier version” of him.

He said he always welcomed boxers coming across from other sports to help bring in a wider audience and generate more local excitement.

“No, I’m not surprised (at the interest in Mooney and Bellchambers) because I know that these different sportspeople who come into boxing, it always makes for an exciting fight night. No one knows what to expect,” he said.
