IT’S a fight that hardly needs promoting but UFC featherweight champion Jose Aldo and Conor McGregor have added more spice to their upcoming bout in a fiery press conference which threatened to boil over at times.
As champion, Aldo entered the Maracanazinho Arena in Rio de Janeiro with his hometown fans cheering wildly because of their hatred for McGregor.
Aldo didn’t exactly defuse the situation.
Strutting in wearing a black suit white shirt and designer shades, Aldo used one finger to let McGregor know exactly how he feels about him.
Tension has been brewing between the pair since McGregor began his exciting climb up the featherweight rankings.
Mixing a pay-per-view sales generating mix of knockout power and pure personality, the Irishman has become one of the biggest names in the sport.
McGregor started putting Aldo and his Brazilian fans off-side by attending UFC 179 in October last year where he told local fans: “No Brazilian will have a world title after I am done”.
He followed that up by jumping outside of the Octagon to confront Aldo immediately after defeating Dennis Siver in January.
McGregor will ride a 13-fight winning streak into the championship fight at UFC 189 on July 11 and with his size and striking ability is sure to offer a stern test to Aldo (25-1).
Aldo, to his credit, has responded perhaps better than anyone to McGregor’s gamesmanship.
He didn’t flinch at the Siver fight and showed again in this press conference that he’s not afraid to play the hype game with a man who arguably does it as well as any fighter in the UFC.
Conor McGregor: Aldo's kicks will be inefficient. I'm a bang a left hand straight down the pipe and break his nose #UFC189
