IT was a day to forget for Claremont and New Norfolk in the SFL’s 16th round on Saturday as their opponents Cygnet and Huonville Lions kicked a combined 508 points to their total of 21.

In was expected to be a hard day at the office for the competition’s bottom two teams against the top two, Claremont went down to Cygnet at The Port’s home ground 249-1 and the Eagles did marginally better but still hammered by the Lions on their home deck 254-20.

At Huonville Oval, big forward Mickey Paul kicked 11 of the Lions’ 37 goals, with Jackson Keogh (five goals) the best of the rest among 13 goal kickers.

Huonville coach Brady Jones said “Bull” was on a hot streak

“He kicked 11 last week as well so he’s kicked 22 in two weeks,” Jones said.

“He’s fit and he’s having a crack and pretty keen to get success at the back end of the year, so he’s putting in, the big fella, and he’s getting the rewards,” Jones said.

Jones praised New Norfolk for its efforts under immense pressure.

“We played them up at Boyer earlier in the year and we ended up winning by 100 points. It was a tough contest and they had a crack all day,” Jones said’

“That’s not to say they didn’t today, but they ended up with no one on the bench and I think they had a few guys double up, and they still had a crack so good on them.”

Huonville is undefeated and heading toward a possible grand final appearance, while New Norfolk is yet to have a win.

“They are going through and tough time, by the looks of it, so to still roll up and have a crack like they do and with a young group, credit to them,” Jones said.

“Hopefully they all stick together. I think most clubs have been through periods like that and it’s tough.

“They’ve been a bloody good club for a long time so hopefully they can stick it out and come out the other end of it.”

With so much that went right, Jones was impressed with the way his men stuck to the process, and the intercept marking of Cameron Johns across half-back and centre half-forward Mitch Walker for his four goals and work rate up and down the ground.

At Cygnet, The Port’s vice-captain Jo Direen kicked a game-high seven goals in the home side’s 40.19 (259) to 0.1 (1).

At Pembroke Park, Brighton continued its winning way by beating Sorell 10.13 (73) to 8.2 (50).
