Australian basketball icon Lauren Jackson is set to join the WNBL as a special advisor as the league prepares to embark on its new era under Wollemi Capital Group Syndicate and the NBL.

The five time Olympian, seven time WNBL and dual WNBA champion will assist with achieving the ambitious plans of the new owners in a part time capacity, while maintaining her head of women in basketball role with Basketball Australia and work with She Hoops.

The legend of the game only finished up as an active player in the league barely 12 months ago, after the 2023-24 Championship winning season with the Southside Flyers.

“This league has been at the heart of my journey in basketball,” Jackson said.

“Now, I have the chance to help create an exciting future where our talented players thrive in a professional environment worthy of their skill and passion. I can’t wait to get started.”

New WNBL CEO Jennie Sager previously told CODE Sports of her excitement to collaborate with the “pinnacle of women’s basketball in Australia” as she builds her team to transform the elite game.

Now, she has the biggest champion of the women’s game to assist her with the league’s rebirth.

“Bringing Lauren into this journey was a no-brainer,” Sager said.

“She’s a trailblazer, a five-time Olympian, and someone who knows what it takes to

build success.

“Her deep connection to the league, her experience as a player, and her vision for its future will be instrumental in helping us raise the bar.”

The WNBL has committed to a bold strategy while creating new opportunities for the best female talent in the country.

The new ownership will come into effect on April 2.
