Infamous Tom Brady comment broke Gisele Bündchen’s heart

Gisele Bundchen briefly lost her cool after the 2012 Super Bowl — but the way her fiery comeback was interpreted broke the model’s heart.

New Tom Brady documentary tells story of the GOAT

It’s been nearly a decade since world-famous supermodel Gisele Bündchen’s post-Super Bowl comment took the media by storm.

But as NFL icon Tom Brady’s better half recalled in a recent episode of Man in the Arena, the documentary series about Brady’s life and career, the fallout — with many of the fingers being pointed at then-New England Patriots receiver Wes Welker — broke her heart.

Bündchen, who married Brady in 2009, was in attendance for Super Bowl 46 in February 2012, when the Patriots faced the New York Giants. She sat with the wife of ex-Patriots star Vince Wilfork for the game and calmed her nerves with some wine.

“That whole stadium was so tense, you felt like, I mean I was like, I couldn’t handle, it was too much for me. I was like a nail-biter. I was like, ‘Give me some wine’,” Bündchen said of the game.

“I was with Bianca, Vince Wilfork’s wife, and she’s like, ‘G, come on, have another one’. And you know I’m drinking wine because I’m just trying to relax. It was the most stressful game ever, I think.”

With the Patriots leading 17-15 In the fourth quarter with four minutes left, Brady tried to connect with one of his favourite targets, Welker, on a deep pass on the left hashmark. A catch on the second-and-11 play would have been a massive first down and allowed the Patriots to take precious time off the clock. Instead, they were forced to punt and Giants quarterback Eli Manning led the New York outfit to the game-winning touchdown.

Brady attempted to throw a Hail Mary in the final moments of the game but to no avail and New England went down 21-17.

“So I’m drinking wine with Bianca and then, in the end, they lost,” Bündchen said. “So now we have to go walk to the frickin’ elevator. And these guys, who probably had a few drinks on them as well, were like, ‘Your husband sucks’, ‘Eli Manning owns your husband’.”

Bündchen then had something of a hot-mic moment, uttering: “My husband cannot f***ing throw the ball and catch the ball at the same time.”

Upon reuniting with Brady at the hotel later in the evening, Bündchen told him she made a comment.

“I said, ‘Well, you can’t say that’,” Brady said on Man in the Arena.

Although Bündchen believed her words were “mild”, she noted: “You don’t want someone saying that about your husband.”

By the next morning, Welker was believed to be at the receiving end of Bündchen’s remark.

“When they made it about Wes, it broke my heart,” she said. “It was like, ‘Are you kidding me? That’s the hardest-working guy I know on that team’.”

Welker, who played for the Patriots from 2007 to 2012 and is close with Brady, also appeared in the latest episode of the docu-series and addressed Bündchen’s comment.

“I know where her heart is and I know who she is, so I almost agreed with her at the time,” Welker said. “I was more mad at myself.

“Just funny that, you know, you get remembered by the one, you know. It’s just something that I gotta move on from.”

Following the latest Super Bowl loss, Bündchen tried to help Brady put life into perspective.

“I just kind of got him to see, ‘Look what you have. Like, don’t just focus on the things that you don’t have. Like you didn’t have this win, but look at everything you have’,” she said.

“‘You have a family that loves you. You have won so many already’. I mean ... just keep things in perspective.”
