Now, nearly 30 years on from the first western derby, West Coast will take on Fremantle for the 60th time at Optus Stadium on Sunday.
Both teams have endured a winless start to the season meaning plenty is on the line for the Eagles and Dockers.
With the help of Champion Data, and to celebrate 30 years of one of football’s fiercest rivalries, we have compiled the best 60 western derby performances of all time.
Was Harley Reid robbed? Who should’ve really won the Glendinning-Allan medal in 2003 that was controversially awarded to Michael Gardiner? Did Dockers fans have the right to boo Chris Judd?
Now we have the answers. Ranking points have determined who the ultimate derby specialist is.
Ranking points only go back until 1999 and the first derby was played in 1995.
But these are the 60 most statistically dominant derby performances on record.
60. CALEB SERONG (FREMANTLE) – 143
Round 3, 2023
Serong won his second Glendinning-Allan medal for this performance - 35 disposals and 9 score involvements.
59. SHAUN MCMANUS (FREMANTLE) – 143
Round 21, 2000
Fremantle’s favourite son had 25 touches as the Dockers got up in a one-point thriller.
58. DANIEL KERR (WEST COAST) – 144
Round 21, 2004
Kerr had 24 and a goal in West Coast’s 48-point win.
57. GLEN JAKOVICH (WEST COAST) – 144
Round 6, 2000
In a record-breaking day for the Eagles, Jakovich kicked two goals from 24 touches.

The most controversial Glendinning-Allan medal decision in western derby history just got more complicated. Infamously, the five voters chose Ashley Sampi. But Ross Glendinning overruled them and awarded the medal to Michael Gardiner. Champion Data says that Bell was actually the best player on the ground with 28 disposals. Long may the debate continue.
16. JOSH CARR (FREMANTLE) – 162
Round 6, 2006
On this particular day, the Glendinning-Allan medal was awarded to Chris Judd, which attracted boos from the Fremantle fans in the crowd. Champion Data says that Carr was actually the most impactful player on the ground with 26 touches and three goals.
15. PETER BELL (FREMANTLE) – 164
Round 1, 2002
West Coast kicked off the coaching career of favourite son John Worsfold with a classy win but Bell was prolific with 39 disposals and lost the medal to Chad Fletcher.
14. PAUL HASLEBY (FREMANTLE) – 165
Round 4, 2001
Hasleby didn’t win the medal but he Fremantle’s best with 30 disposals and 11 clearances.
13. SHANNON HURN (WEST COAST) – 165
Round 17, 2017
The first of three Glendinning-Allan medals for the Eagles skipper who a rock in defence with 34 disposals.
12. PAUL HASLEBY (FREMANTLE) – 165
Round 6, 2004
It was a tight call for the between Peter Bell (33 and one goal) and Paul Hasleby (30 disposals and two) for the Glendinning-Allan medal but the latter won his third.
11. PAUL HASLEBY (FREMANTLE) -167
Round 22, 2003
Hasleby picked up his second Glendinning-Allan thanks to 29 disposals and eight clearances.
10. PETER BELL (FREMANTLE) - 169
Round 19, 2001
West Coast won the game, Glen Jackovich won the medal but Pell was deemed to have been the best player on the ground with 31 disposals and seven clearances.
9. PETER BELL (FREMANTLE) – 169
Round 21, 2006
Bell won the Glendinning-Allan medal for his 28 disposals and two goals in a 57-point win.
8. LACHIE NEALE (FREMANTLE) – 170
Round 3, 2015
The Dockers kicked the first 11 goals of the match and Neale won the Glendinning-Allan medal courtesy of his 42 disposals.
7. PAUL DUFFIELD (FREMANTLE) – 173
Round 6, 2009
The Dockers won by 13 points and Duffield was exceptional down back with 34 disposals but the Glendinning-Allan medal went to Hasleby who had 35.
6. ADRIAN FLETCHER (FREMANTLE) – 174
Round 16, 1999
July 18, 1999, the day Fremantle stepped out of cross-town rival West Coast by winning the Western Derby for the very first time. On a historic day, Fletcher was the pick of the bunch, finishing with 39 disposals 10 clearances and a goal. Also became the first Docker to win a Glendinning-Allan medal.
5. PAUL HASLEBY (FREMANTLE) – 176
Round 16, 2002
Hasleby won his first Glendinning-Allan in a fiery 30-point win, finishing with 30 disposals and nine clearances.
4. DEAN COX (WEST COAST) – 177 POINTS
Round 3, 2005
The medal went to Chris Judd but Cox finished with 20 disposals, 18 hitouts and two goals and was incredibly influential.
3. SCOTT CUMMINGS (WEST COAST) – 178 POINTS
Round 6, 2000
This clash still holds the record for the biggest margin in derby history (117) and Cummings was the instigator, kicking 10 goals to win the Glendinning-Allan medal.
2. MATTHEW PAVLICH (FREMANTLE) – 180 POINTS
Round 19, 2012
An eight goal haul from the Dockers skipper delivers the second-best derby performance of all-time. Pavlich took full advantage of Darren Glass’ absence and piled on the pain, leading his side to a 65-point win and securing his third Glendinning-Allan medal.
1. PETER BELL (FREMANTLE) – 189 POINTS
Round 6, 2004
Here it is, the best derby performance on record. And controversially, Bell didn’t win the Glendinning-Allan for this 189 ranking point effort. In a 10-point win, that honour went to Paul Hasleby who had 30 touches and kicked two goals. Bell finished with 33 and one.
