West Coast has adhered to AFL protocols around training in pairs despite video of star Oscar Allen claiming Eagles players trained in groups of 10.

The Eagles say the video was recorded on April 27 – the day before the AFL cracked down on clubs training in groups of 6-10 players despite new WA rules.

The video was only posted over the weekend with GWS players Tom Sheridan for an E-sports competition “The Lockdown League”.

Asked by former Fremantle player Sheridan about training together in groups of 10, Allen replied: “Yeah, it’s terrific. A couple of the boys, Jack Darling, Jeremy McGovern and the likes, we were all training in a group of 10.

“It was great to get out on the oval kicking the ball together. It was really enjoyable. Hopefully the rates continue to go down and we can get out on the field as soon as possible.”

The AFL had been keen to find out the context and timing of the video as it prepares to hand out sanctions to Adelaide.

West Australian premier Mark McGowan had relaxed social distancing rules in that week but it was only on April 28 that the league ruled no team could have a competitive advantage.

The Herald Sun revealed last week that, after rival club complaints, AFL footy boss Steve Hocking told clubs they were not able to get a competitive advantage over other clubs in states where players could only train in pairs.

The Victorian state government on Monday allowed Victorian clubs to train in full teams from 11.59pm on Tuesday night.

But the league will have to make a ruling on when all clubs can return together given some West Coast players are still in quarantine until Thursday week.
