Two men have been charged after they allegedly managed to bypass security and bring loaded guns into the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) during a packed AFL match.
The men attended Thursday night’s football match between Carlton and Collingwood with the firearms. Around 82,000 people were in attendance.
It’s alleged weapons were found hidden in the pants of the men.
Police were alerted to the pair after one began causing issues in the crowd in the second half of the game, The Age reported.
During a search, both men, whom police said were on bail, were allegedly found carrying a weapon.
A 21-year-old Roxburgh Park man and a 27-year-old Broadmeadows man were taken into custody, police confirmed.
Police were called to the area by ground security staff to assist with two men who were refusing to leave the venue due to behaviour.
“As a consequence, police have arrested two males and during a search it is alleged two firearms were located on each of these males,” police said.
The 27-year-old man has been charged with multiple offences including possessing a loaded firearm, possessing ammunition without licence and failing to appear on bail.
The 21-year-old has been charged with prohibited person possessing a firearm, possessing ammunition without licence and committing an indictable offence whilst on bail.
The arrests were witnessed by onlookers at the stadium, with a significant police presence seen after the match, The Age reported.
No one was injured in the incident.
The MCG has recently installed new AI security scanners at the venue which aims to detect items such as guns. This has reduced physical security checks.
Collingwood defeated Carlton by 17 points.
The men were remanded in custody and will appear before the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on Friday.
