Quantifying the success of a trade can be fraught with danger.

While Patrick Dangerfield has enjoyed success at Geelong and Lance Franklin continued to be a superstar at Sydney after moving from Hawthorn, some camps would contend that without a premiership, those trades haven’t completely paid off.

Port Adelaide games record holder Kane Cornes has run his finger over all of the trades from the last three years and devised five exchanges “clubs would like back” if they had their time again.

1. JESSE HOGAN

Trade:

Melbourne traded Hogan and Pick 65 to Fremantle for Picks 6 and 23

What Cornes said:

"Fremantle trade pick No. 6, which they received from Brisbane for Lachie Neale, and pick No. 23 to Melbourne for Jesse Hogan. Hogan played 12 games in his first year and now we’re hearing he may never play for that football club again, whilst Lachie Neale went onto make All-Australian in his first year at Brisbane."

2. STEVEN MAY

Trade: Gold Coast traded May and Kade Kolodjashnij to Melbourne for Pick 6

What Cornes said:

"We know what a disaster Steven May was for Melbourne from the minute he basically walked into the place, and to rub salt into that wound, Gold Coast used that pick No. 6 to select one of the most exciting young key forwards in the game – Ben King. May is 28, he’s still got four years left to run on that contract, which is believed to be worth $800,000 per season."

3. LACHIE WELLER

Trade:

Fremantle traded Weller to Gold Coast for Pick 2

What Cornes said:

"Gold Coast traded pick No. 2 for Fremantle’s Lachie Weller. Weller is a handy citizen, he’s a foot soldier … but pick No. 2? Goes to show how desperate the situation is on the Gold Coast."

5. BRYCE GIBBS

Trade:

Carlton traded Gibbs, Pick 77, future second-round pick and future third-round pick to Adelaide for Pick 10, 16, 17 and future second-round pick

What Cornes said:

"Gibbs is going to be 31 by Round One this year, we know he was dropped four times last year, he’s got two years left on a deal that’s worth about $600,000 a year. They’d like to have that one back."
