The Score: Sydney school students had no idea who Lance Franklin was

We know Sydney has done an amazing job pushing Aussie rules into the rugby-centric state.

The statistics will tell you junior numbers are up and big strides are being made.

But every now and then there is a wake-up call — which is exactly what Lance Franklin found at a recent school visit.

Buddy and a couple of other Swans visited a high school near the SCG for a clinic.

As part of the introduction, the 90 kids who were assembled for the kick-to-kick were asked one question.

“How many know who this is?” the host said, pointing to the player many say is the AFL’s best.

After an awkward silence and a lot of blank faces, one hand was raised, and thankfully correctly answered, “Buddy’’.

But that was it — one out of 90.

CURRYING FAVOUR

They take their food very seriously down at Melbourne Rebels.

A handful of the Super Rugby stars have created a curry club that brings with it a lot of prestige.

Centre Bill Meakes and lock Matt Philip are part of the elite group of foodies who once a month meet at a different Indian restaurant.

During this week’s Rebels Radio on SEN, the pair explained how a different member of the group nominates a restaurant and they then score it out of 10.

The restaurant with the best rating wins an award, but it’s the initiation process to get into the curry club which is the hardest part.

Any prospective member will receive a phone call from the coach’s phone and they must answer: “In curry we trust”.

If they don’t, then they’re either ruled out from being invited into the club or have to eat the hottest thing on the menu at their first restaurant sitting.

And the kicker … they’re not allowed to have any water or liquid next to them when they do the chilli initiation.

THE WHISPER

Have the old-school ties that bind struck again down at AFL headquarters? We hear yet another Old Xaverian has landed a plum job at Docklands.
