Collingwood star Steele Sidebottom has revealed how close he came to serious trouble when his house burnt down last year.
The Magpies midfielder was doing work at the front of the house when someone from across the road alerted him to the fact something was burning in his backyard.

By the time Sidebottom got around there the outdoor BBQ was on fire and flames were sneaking up the fence.
“I could see the neighbour’s car was parked along the fence so me being the firefighter I am, I grabbed the garden hose and tried to put it out,” Sidebottom told the ‘Jock and Journo’ podcast.
“There was still a little bit of a flame there and then the gas bottle started whistling and sort of pumping gas towards the house.
“Once that happened it was probably a good time to get out so I threw the hose, ran out the front and the rest is history.”
Sidebottom then watched as three fire trucks fought the blaze which gutted the back section of the house and took out his neighbour’s Land Cruiser.
All he could think about was whether he’d paid his insurance - which he had - with the cause of the fire revealed to be a bar fridge overheating in the BBQ area.
The incident certainly put a spanner in the works of what Sidebottom had planned for that evening - a reunion of the 2010 premiership team.
BLACK’S LIE GAME NEEDS SOME WORK
Brisbane champion Simon Black may have to learn how to tell a fib a bit better if he’s going to cut it on Australian Survivor.
After The Score revealed on Tuesday that the three-time premiership hero is currently on a South Pacific island filming the realty TV show, his poor attempts at keeping the secret have been revealed.
Black is a regular special comments man in Brisbane for Triple M and had to ask for time off to take part in The Champions v Contenders series.
He told management he’d be in Italy for six weeks but when pressed on where exactly he would be spending his time there, he drew a complete blank which raised suspicions.
Black’s foray into Australian Survivor means he will miss next month’s Brisbane Lions Hall of Fame dinner where he was set to be inducted.
The Lions have now decided to delay the Brownlow Medallist’s entry by 12 months given he wasn’t going to be there in person for the June 8 function.
THE WHISPER
A no-show last week has poured more fuel on an already volatile situation which has the radio world talking and long-time friendships being tested.
