HAWTHORN wants a first-round draft pick for Bradley Hill and if Sunday’s second half was any indication the triple reigning premiers will get their way.
Hill, 23, provided the much-needed spark after half-time to help guide the Hawks to a comfortable – albeit scrappy - 70-point win over Richmond at the MCG.
It was the kind of performance that would have not only thrilled Hawthorn coach Alastair Clarkson but the wingman’s Fremantle suitors as well.
Hill met with Fremantle coach Ross Lyon last week as he weighs up his footballing future and the prospect of playing alongside older brother Stephen at the Dockers next year.
He showed no signs of homesickness on Sunday at the MCG.
Hill created and defended at speed, slicing and dicing his way through Richmond’s defences on his way to a season-high 31 disposals at 81 per cent efficiency.
Finding space at will, Hill – contracted until the end of the season – put in a splendid second half starting with a holding-the-ball decision and then working hard across the ground to help orchestrate a Paul Puopolo goal.
Hill dished off in tight to Jordan Lewis on the Members’ Stand wing and then followed up the Hawk enforcer’s kick across the ground to get the handball from Brendan Whitecross.
His kick inside 50 – one of seven entries for the afternoon – was pinpoint to Puopolo.
Lyon would be licking his lips.
The prospect of Hill working in tandem with his brother Stephen and luckless Harley Bennell could see the Dockers charge back into finals calculations.
Sunday was as much as statement from Hill at it was from Hawthorn.
The reigning premier put its talons to the throats of a bitterly disappointing Richmond in the second half to send club champion Sam Mitchell off a winner in his 300th game.
