Geelong legend Matthew Scarlett to juggle Torquay U16 coaching gig with part-time Melbourne role
After being announced as part of Melbourne’s coaching panel, a local club has confirmed a famous Geelong name will take charge of one of their teams.
Melbourne won’t be the only club benefiting from the tutelage of Matthew Scarlett, with Torquay’s under-16 side to be led by the Cats legend.
The 46-year-old has been announced as Torquay’s U16 division one coach, where he is set to coach his twin sons Oliver and Henry.
The pair starred for the Tigers in their top-age under-14 campaign, Oliver kicking 43 goals in 18 games and Harry slotting 26 majors in 18 matches.
Melbourne confirmed earlier this month that Scarlett will be part of the Demons’ coaching panel as a part-time specialist coach, reuniting with Geelong premiership teammate and new Demons coach Steven King.
“We are thrilled to welcome Matt Scarlett as our U16 Division 1 Boys Coach for season 2025,” Torquay Football Club posted on social media.
“A Geelong great, club premiership captain and one of the best defenders the game has seen, Matt brings elite experience, leadership and a genuine passion for developing young footballers.”
Along with his decorated playing career, where he earned six All-Australian blazers and won three premierships, Scarlett was an assistant coach with Geelong from 2015-2021.
Since then he has been an assistant coach with Barwon Heads, playing a part in helping local product Oli Wiltshire get drafted to Geelong from the Bellarine league.
Scarlett is the second AFL great to join Torquay in the past week following Travis Boak’s return to his junior club.
