Geelong rubbishes reports of tabling a monster offer to Fremantle ruck Sean Darcy

A report of a huge offer made by Geelong to prise Sean Darcy out of Fremantle have been played down in a big way by the Cats.

Geelong has rubbished reports it tabled a $5m offer to lure Fremantle ruck Sean Darcy back to Victoria.

Darcy, who is out-of-contract at the end of next season, is in talks with the Dockers on an extension and the 24-year-old is one of the most highly prized rucks in the competition.

Darcy is currently nursing a hamstring strain and contract discussions are expected to ramp up when he returns to action.

Geelong has long been linked to the left-footer, given the played for the Geelong Falcons on his way to the AFL and grew up in country Victoria.

The West Australian reported on Thursday that Geelong had put an offer to the ruck of “about $1m per season over five years” but a senior Cats official told the Geelong Addy that was not the case, labelling the report as categorically untrue.

Offers of such significance have to be passed by Geelong’s board, which did not happen in the Darcy case.

Geelong was also linked to Brodie Grundy when Collingwood was shopping the All-Australian last year before he landed at Melbourne, but the Cats chose to stick with premiership ruck Rhys Stanley, backup Jonathon Ceglar and highly-rated youngster Toby Conway as its rucks.

Geelong players returned from the mid-season break for training on Thursday as preparations began for next week’s monster clash against Port Adelaide.

The Cats were due to hold a main session on Saturday morning, with Patrick Dangerfield (hamstring), Mitch Duncan (hamstring) and Max Holmes (knee) all on track to be available for selection.

Recruit Jack Bowes is also firmly in contention after he had 28 disposals in a return from injury in the VFL last week.
