Nathan Buckley memorabilia auction fetches about $200k in Charles Leski Auctions sale

One of Nathan Buckley’s jumpers sold for $16,000 as treasured items from the Collingwood champion’s AFL career went under the hammer at auction.

An auction of more than 200 items from Collingwood champion Nathan Buckley’s cherished football memorabilia collection has reaped around $200,000 — more than double the original estimation.

Charles Leski Auctions brought the gavel down on some of Buckley’s most prized possessions on Wednesday, items that the former Magpie player and coach reluctantly put up for sale following his recent divorce to his former wife Tania.

Buckley told the Herald Sun last month that he had to buy back his medals, including his 2003 Brownlow Medal, 2002 Norm Smith Medal and his six Copeland Trophies.

Several items from Nathan Buckley’s decorated career went up for auction.

A spokesman for Leski Auctions said the collectors seeking Buckley’s keepsakes had been two or three times more than their usual sports memorabilia auctions, with only a handful of items remaining unsold and with a total of around $200,000 bid.

Buckley’s 2002 grand final jumper — he wore it in Collingwood’s heartbreaking loss to Brisbane, a game in which he won the Norm Smith Medal — was sold for $16,000, which was more than $10,000 above the estimate.

His grand final jumper from the following year – 2003 – reached $5,500, while his winning Port Adelaide SANFL grand final jumper from 1992 was sold for $12,000.

Other Collingwood game-worn jumpers reached between $2,000 to $3,000, and even a guernsey he wore for Southern Districts in the Northern Territory made $850.
