AFL Trade Period: Where key deals sit after Carlton lands pick 14 from Hawthorn in stunning move

Carlton and Hawthorn’s pick swap has turned the trade period on its head. JON RALPH breaks down what it means for several stars and the Blues’ hopes of taking two highly-touted father-sons.

Hawthorn still believes it can secure Tom Barrass despite its dramatic move to trade out its cherished No.14 draft pick for a pair of future selections from Carlton.

The trade period was turned on its head on Friday by Hawthorn’s bold decision to trade pick 14 for Carlton’s future first and second-rounders in a deal that put moves for Barrass and Liam Baker into limbo.

As revealed by the Herald Sun, Hawthorn grew tired of offering the No.14 draft pick for Eagles defender Barrass without result and instead decided to maximise its assets.

The Hawks now have two first-rounders and two second-rounders in the 2025 national draft and will attempt to broker a deal with the Eagles.

But the Hawks are likely to only offer up a future first and second-rounder for Barrass _ and ask for a third-rounder back _ rather than satisfy the Eagles request for two first-round picks.

Hawthorn was not even prepared to offer up its pick 14 and a future second-rounder for Barrass before Friday’s pick swap, so the parties are still some way away.

TRADE PERIOD: ALL THE KEY MOVES FROM DAY FIVE

Carlton now has picks 12 and 14 and is content to use them both in the national draft.

To trade the future first and second rounders the Blues gave up their No.36 pick and No.66 pick and secured the Lions future second-rounder and this year’s pick 73.

It allowed the Blues under league rules to trade both picks because they still had a future second rounder.

The Blues have not had recent discussions with Houston and believe he is still Collingwood-bound if the Pies, Gold Coast and Port Adelaide can agree on a three-club deal.

But if the Houston deal falls over _ and there are still five days to run on the trade period _ then the Blues would offer pick 12 for the dual All Australian.

They have traded out pick 36 and must retain their future second-rounder linked to Brisbane, so have little more left to give.

They would use pick 12 and one of Matt Kennedy or Lewis Young but the Power seems uninterested in either of those two players.

Meanwhile the Eagles now will not have the No.14 pick to trade for Richmond vice-captain Liam Baker.

Baker had pledged himself to the Eagles, who had repeatedly promised him they would secure the trade collateral to get him home.

They have pick 3 and would use that in a pick slide with Richmond to secure Baker but Richmond’s list boss Blair Hartley is not interested in that deal.

So there is a real chance Baker might find himself at the Dockers, who have picks 10, 11 and 18.

They are keen to give away 10 and 18 to the Tigers for Shai Bolton, but would be prepared to offer up 11 for Baker.

Baker is getting his head around whether he moves to the Dockers or considers alternate plans.

In theory he could head to the Eagles through the pre-season draft but he has always been keen for Richmond to get some compensation.

And the Eagles’ inability to get a deal done for him will not help their dealings with his camp, who now have to scramble to get him to a club where he is happy to play.

The Tigers would also have to consider whether they would accept a future pick for Baker.
